hugetlb_cgroup_css_alloc() rounds the counter limit down to a multiple of
the huge page size and then applies it inside an assertion:

	VM_BUG_ON(page_counter_set_max(fault, limit));
	VM_BUG_ON(page_counter_set_max(rsvd, limit));

With CONFIG_DEBUG_VM=n, VM_BUG_ON(cond) is BUILD_BUG_ON_INVALID(cond),
i.e.  ((void)(sizeof((__force long)(cond)))), whose operand is never
evaluated.  page_counter_set_max() is not a predicate - it performs
xchg(&amp;counter-&gt;max, nr_pages) - so on every non-debug kernel the limit is
never applied and the counters keep page_counter_init()'s
PAGE_COUNTER_MAX.

That is user-visible, because hugetlb_cgroup_read_u64_max() recomputes the
same rounded value and uses equality as its "unlimited" sentinel. 
PAGE_COUNTER_MAX is LONG_MAX / PAGE_SIZE = 2251799813685247, which is odd,
so round_down() really does change it and the two sides disagree.  With
CONFIG_DEBUG_VM=n:

	$ cat /sys/fs/cgroup/t/hugetlb.2MB.max
	9223372036854771712

and with this patch:

	$ cat /sys/fs/cgroup/t/hugetlb.2MB.max
	max

A debug option should not change cgroup output.

Call the function, then assert the result, as v6.12 did.  Use
VM_WARN_ON_ONCE() rather than restoring VM_BUG_ON(): the two are identical
under CONFIG_DEBUG_VM=n, and checkpatch asks that new code not use BUG()
variants.

This is the exact same thing as the 'alloc_obj()' version, only much
smaller because there are a lot fewer users of the *alloc_flex()
interface.

As with alloc_obj() version, this was done entirely with mindless brute
force, using the same script, except using 'flex' in the pattern rather
than 'objs*'.

This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using

    git grep -l '\&lt;k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
        xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'

to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.

Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.

For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate
conversion.

This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:

Single allocations:	kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with:	kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)

Array allocations:	kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with:	kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)

Flex array allocations:	kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with:	kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)

(where TYPE may also be *VAR)

The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

A false-positive compile warnings with -Wformat-trucation was introduced
by commit 47179fe03588 ("mm/hugetlb_cgroup: prepare cftypes based on
template") on arch s390.  Suppress it by replacing snprintf() with
scnprintf().

Currently page_counter tracks failcnt for counters used by v1 and v2
controllers.  However failcnt is only exported for v1 deployment and thus
there is no need to maintain it in v2.  The oom report does expose failcnt
for memory and swap in v2 but v2 already maintains MEMCG_MAX and
MEMCG_SWAP_MAX event counters which can be used.

Let's convert hugetlb_cgroup_css_offline() and
hugetlb_cgroup_move_parent() to work on folios.  hugepage_activelist
contains folios, not pages.

While at it, rename page_hcg simply to hcg, removing most of the "page"
terminology.

This removes an unnecessary call to compound_head().

Patch series "mm: memcg: page counters optimizations", v3.

This patchset contains 3 independent small optimizations of page counters.


This patch (of 3):

Memory protection (min/low) requires a constant tracking of protected
memory usage.  propagate_protected_usage() is called on each page counters
update and does a number of operations even in cases when the actual
memory protection functionality is not supported (e.g.  hugetlb cgroups or
memcg swap counters).

It's obviously inefficient and leads to a waste of CPU cycles.  It can be
addressed by calling propagate_protected_usage() only for the counters
which do support memory guarantees.  As of now it's only memcg-&gt;memory -
the unified memory memcg counter.
