<title>netfs: Fix read progress reporting</title>

For really big read RPC ops that span multiple folios, netfslib allows the
filesystem to give progress notifications to wake up the collector thread
to do a collection of folios that have now been fetched, even if the RPC is
still ongoing, thereby allowing the application to make progress.

This works by taking the current rreq-&gt;cleaned_to value (which indicates
which folios have been unlocked) and adding the stashed size of the next
folio to it.  cleaned_to, however, is subject to 64-bit tearing on a 32-bit
arch.

Fix this by stashing the next progress notification point as a size_t
(which won't tear) to be added to rreq-&gt;start (which won't change), with
the collector thread calculating that from cleaned_to plus the next folio
size.

Further, however, if the folios are small, the collector thread gets
constantly woken up - which has a negative performance impact on the
system.

Fix that too by setting a minimum trigger of 256KiB or the size of the
folio at the front of the queue, whichever is larger.  Note that this has
an issue that different subreqs have different need-to-be-cached
properties; this is solved by a preceding patch that marks the property on
the folios whilst issuing subreqs rather than when collecting them.

Also, make sure rreq-&gt;cleaned_to is initialised up front, along with
rreq-&gt;collected_to and stream-&gt;collected_to.

Mark folios with NETFS_FOLIO_COPY_TO_CACHE whilst issuing subreqs rather than
when collecting them.  This means that the collector thread doesn't have to
try and keep track of which subreqs contribute to which folios - and thus
which folios will need to be copied to the cache because at least one byte
wasn't in the cache.  Instead, this is marked on the folios up front and the
collector need only consider the folios.

For PG_private_2-using filesystems, PG_private_2 is set instead of
NETFS_FOLIO_COPY_TO_CACHE, but otherwise it works the same.

The NETFS_RREQ_COPY_TO_CACHE is replaced with NETFS_RREQ_CANCEL_CACHING, which
is now set if caching fails somewhere, thereby causing the collection thread
to cancel the copy-to-cache marks on the remaining folios.

There are some synchronisation issues that derive from the app thread
adding more folios to the rolling buffer whilst the collector thread is
looking at them or trying to clear them, such as determining the setting of
front_folio_order when the next folio hasn't been added yet,

The reason for the rolling buffer approach is that loading the buffer
upfront and then dropping all the refs just acquired is quite a slow
operation, and loading progressively allows some of the cost to be deferred
until after at least some of the I/O is started.

Instead, a better way is to load all the folios into the rolling buffer
upfront - and then drop the refs later, once the I/O is in progress.  (Even
better would be for the refs not to be there at all.)

Fix this by changing the rolling buffer loader to load all the folios
selected by the VM for readahead upfront into the folio queue.  The folio
queue is allocated a batch worth at a time as we don't know how many folios
are involved (the readahead_control struct, alas, has a page count, not a
folio count).

The folio refs acquired from readahead are then dropped in bulk once the
first subrequest is dispatched as it's quite a slow operation.  The
collector waits for NETFS_RREQ_NEED_PUT_RA_REFS to be cleared so that it
doesn't unlock folios before the xarray has been scanned for them.

This simplifies the buffer handling later and isn't noticeably slower as
the xarray doesn't need to be modified and the folios are all already
pre-locked.

<title>netfs: Fix folio-&gt;private handling in netfs_perform_write()</title>

Under some circumstances, netfs_perform_write() doesn't correctly
manipulate folio-&gt;private between NULL, NETFS_FOLIO_COPY_TO_CACHE, pointing
to a group and pointing to a netfs_folio struct, leading to potential
multiple attachments of private data with associated folio ref leaks and
also leaks of netfs_folio structs or netfs_group refs.

Fix this by consolidating the place at which a folio is marked uptodate in
one place and having that look at what's attached to folio-&gt;private and
decide how to clean it up and then set the new group.  Also, the content
shouldn't be flushed if group is NULL, even if a group is specified in the
netfs_group parameter, as that would be the case for a new folio.  A
filesystem should always specify netfs_group or never specify netfs_group.

The Sashiko auto-review tool noted that it was theoretically possible that
the fpos &gt;= ctx-&gt;zero_point section might leak if it modified a streaming
write folio.  This is unlikely, but with a network filesystem, third party
changes can happen.  It also pointed out that __netfs_set_group() would
leak if called multiple times on the same folio from the "whole folio
modify section".

<title>netfs: Fix streaming write being overwritten</title>

In order to avoid reading whilst writing, netfslib will allow "streaming
writes" in which dirty data is stored directly into folios without reading
them first.  Such folios are marked dirty but may not be marked uptodate.
If a folio is entirely written by a streaming write, uptodate will be set,
otherwise it will have a netfs_folio struct attached to -&gt;private recording
the dirty region.

In the event that a partially written streaming write page is to be
overwritten entirely by a single write(), netfs_perform_write() will try to
copy over it, but doesn't discard the netfs_folio if it succeeds; further,
it doesn't correctly handle a partial copy that overwrites some of the
dirty data.

Fix this by the following:

 (1) If the folio is successfully overwritten, free the netfs_folio struct
     before marking the page uptodate.

 (2) If the copy to the folio partially fails, but short of the dirty data,
     just ignore the copy.

 (3) If the copy partially fails and overwrites some of the dirty data,
     accept the copy, update the netfs_folio struct to record the new data.
     If the folio is now filled, free the netfs_folio and set uptodate,
     otherwise return a partial write.

Found with:

	fsx -q -N 1000000 -p 10000 -o 128000 -l 600000 \

If a streaming write is made, this will leave the relevant modified folio
in a not-uptodate, but dirty state with a netfs_folio struct hung off of
folio-&gt;private indicating the dirty range.  Subsequently truncating the
file such that the dirty data in the folio is removed, but the first part
of the folio theoretically remains will cause the netfs_folio struct to be
discarded... but will leave the dirty flag set.

If the folio is then read via mmap(), netfs_read_folio() will see that the
page is dirty and jump to netfs_read_gaps() to fill in the missing bits.
netfs_read_gaps(), however, expects there to be a netfs_folio struct
present and can oops because truncate removed it.

Fix this by calling folio_cancel_dirty() in netfs_invalidate_folio() in the
event that all the dirty data in the folio is erased (as nfs does).

Also add some tracepoints to log modifications to a dirty page.

This can be reproduced with something like:

with fscaching disabled (otherwise streaming writes are suppressed) and a
change to netfs_perform_write() to disallow streaming writes if the fd is
open O_RDWR:

	    netfs_is_cache_enabled(ctx)) {

It should be reproducible even without this change, but if prevents the
above trivial xfs_io command from reproducing it.

Note that the initial dd is important: the file must start out sufficiently
large that the zero-point logic doesn't just clear the gaps because it
knows there's nothing in the file to read yet.  Unmounting and mounting is
needed to clear the pagecache (there are other ways to do that that may
also work).

This was initially reproduced with the generic/522 xfstest on some patches
that remove the FMODE_READ restriction.

Pull vfs i_ino updates from Christian Brauner:
 "For historical reasons, the inode-&gt;i_ino field is an unsigned long,
  which means that it's 32 bits on 32 bit architectures. This has caused
  a number of filesystems to implement hacks to hash a 64-bit identifier
  into a 32-bit field, and deprives us of a universal identifier field
  for an inode.

  This changes the inode-&gt;i_ino field from an unsigned long to a u64.
  This shouldn't make any material difference on 64-bit hosts, but
  32-bit hosts will see struct inode grow by at least 4 bytes. This
  could have effects on slabcache sizes and field alignment.

  The bulk of the changes are to format strings and tracepoints, since
  the kernel itself doesn't care that much about the i_ino field. The
  first patch changes some vfs function arguments, so check that one out
  carefully.

  With this change, we may be able to shrink some inode structures. For
  instance, struct nfs_inode has a fileid field that holds the 64-bit
  inode number. With this set of changes, that field could be
  eliminated. I'd rather leave that sort of cleanups for later just to
  keep this simple"

The netfs_io_stream::front member is meant to point to the subrequest
currently being collected on a stream, but it isn't actually used this way
by direct write (which mostly ignores it).  However, there's a tracepoint
which looks at it.  Further, stream-&gt;front is actually redundant with
stream-&gt;subrequests.next.

Fix the potential problem in the direct code by just removing the member
and using stream-&gt;subrequests.next instead, thereby also simplifying the
code.

Update VFS-layer trace event definitions to use u64 instead of
ino_t/unsigned long for inode number fields. Update TP_printk format
strings to use %llu/%llx to match the widened field type. Remove
now-unnecessary (unsigned long) casts since __entry-&gt;ino is already
u64.

Fix netfslib such that when it's making an unbuffered or DIO write, to make
sure that it sends each subrequest strictly sequentially, waiting till the
previous one is 'committed' before sending the next so that we don't have
pieces landing out of order and potentially leaving a hole if an error
occurs (ENOSPC for example).

This is done by copying in just those bits of issuing, collecting and
retrying subrequests that are necessary to do one subrequest at a time.
Retrying, in particular, is simpler because if the current subrequest needs
retrying, the source iterator can just be copied again and the subrequest
prepped and issued again without needing to be concerned about whether it
needs merging with the previous or next in the sequence.

Note that the issuing loop waits for a subrequest to complete right after
issuing it, but this wait could be moved elsewhere allowing preparatory
steps to be performed whilst the subrequest is in progress.  In particular,
once content encryption is available in netfslib, that could be done whilst
waiting, as could cleanup of buffers that have been completed.
