Move the `FixedRegister` from a property of register to become a property of type. Name the new trait `FixedIoLoc` indicating if I/O location of a type is unique for a specific base. Thus, bitfields become just a special case of this (where type is unique because we're generating it in the register macro), and expose feature to registers without inline bitfield definition with the `#[unique]` attribute. Relative registers can be better served by projection to subregion instead of ad-hoc handling in register macro. Projection composes better (e.g. it natively allows relative registers of relative registers without needing additional support). Remove relative register support, and update the documentation to demonstrate how projection and subregions can be used to achieve this instead. Add a rule to allow creating `IoLoc` in `register!()` using an existing type and not create a bitfield. Add an example to demonstrate this for FIFO registers. Currently registers work for all untyped I/O regions, which is not ideal. It allows registers defined for device A to work for another device B and there is no safeguarding at all. All users of the `register!` macro know what type it will be operating on, and that type is consistent across the driver. Therefore, add a `base` parameter to `register!`. Currently this parameter is unused in the generated code; it will be used when all users of `register!` is converted to gain the parameter. For types that are layout-compatible with an I/O capable type, we would want the ability to use them directly for I/O operations. E.g. bitfield! { pub struct Foo(u32) { ... } } #[repr(C)] struct Bar { foo: Foo, } let mmio: Mmio<'_, Bar> = ...; io_read!(mmio, .foo) Currently this feature is available from `register!()` macro but not otherwise available with `io_read!`, `io_write!`. Support this by performing conversions to I/O primitives via the `AsRepr`/`AsReprMut` trait. This makes the `IoLoc::IoType` and `Register::Storage` redundant; thus remove them; also convert register methods to use the `read_val` and `write_val` instead. The existing `register!` macro is implemented as a declarative macro. Reimplement it as proc macro instead, with no functional changes intended. The old implementation produces unhelpful diagnostics when things go wrong. For example, for code like register! { pub(crate) TESTREG(u32) { 31:0 data; } } which misses out the "@ offset" part of the specification, and the following error is produced: error: no rules expected `{` --> test.rs:42:5 | 42 | / register! { 43 | | pub(crate) TESTREG(u32) { 44 | | 31:0 data; ... | 100 | | } | |_____^ no rules expected this token in macro call which isn't very helpful. With the proc macro implementation, the following error is produced: error: expected `@` or `=>` --> tests.rs:43:33 | 43 | pub(crate) TESTREG(u32) { | ^ which is much more helpful. Apart from diagnostics, proc macro also has a benefit of not having follow-set restrictions, which makes syntax like register!(name: ty @ offset); possible; declarative macro will reject this as `@` is not in the follow-set of "ty" metavariable kind. 2026-08-12rust: macros: remove `THIS_MODULE` static from `module!`Alvin Sun
All users have been migrated to `ModuleMetadata::THIS_MODULE` const or `this_module::<LocalModule>()` helper. The `static THIS_MODULE` generated by the `module!` macro is no longer referenced anywhere, so remove it to avoid having two sources of the same `ThisModule` pointer. 2026-08-12rust: module: add `THIS_MODULE` const to `ModuleMetadata` traitAlvin Sun
Since `const_refs_to_static` has been stable as of the MSRV bump, a `ThisModule` pointer can now be used in const contexts. Add a `THIS_MODULE` const to the `ModuleMetadata` trait so that modules can provide their `ThisModule` pointer in const contexts such as static `file_operations`. Add a `this_module()` helper to retrieve the `THIS_MODULE` pointer of a given module type, and update `__init` to use it instead of the `THIS_MODULE` static generated by the `module!` macro. The `static THIS_MODULE` generated by the `module!` macro is retained for backwards compatibility with existing users and removed in a later patch once all references have been migrated. Add support for parsing boolean module parameters in the Rust module! macro. Currently, only integer types are supported by the `module_param!` macros. This patch implements the `ModuleParam` trait for `bool` by delegating the string parsing to the existing C implementation via `kstrtobool_bytes()`. It also wires up `PARAM_OPS_BOOL` so that the Rust parameter system correctly links to the C `param_ops_bool` structure. For demonstration and verification, a boolean parameter is added to `samples/rust/rust_minimal.rs`. Support for boolean parameters will initially be used by the Rust null block driver [1]. 2026-07-11rust: types: introduce ForLt base trait for CovariantForLtDanilo Krummrich
Add a new ForLt trait as a base for CovariantForLt: - ForLt (non-unsafe): represents a type generic over a lifetime, with no covariance guarantee. - CovariantForLt (unsafe): becomes a subtrait of ForLt that additionally proves the type is covariant over its lifetime parameter, providing a safe cast_ref() method. This split allows non-covariant types (e.g. types behind a Mutex) to implement ForLt and participate in DevresLt / registration data patterns that use HRTB closures for sound access, without requiring a covariance proof that would fail to compile. Both macros share the UnsafeForLtImpl helper type, distinguished by a const generic N: ForLt! emits N = 0 (no covariance proof), CovariantForLt! emits N = 1 (with compile-time covariance proof). 2026-05-27rust: types: add `ForLt` trait for higher-ranked lifetime supportGary Guo
There are a few cases, e.g. when dealing with data referencing each other, one might want to write code that is generic over lifetimes. For example, if you want to take a function that takes `&'a Foo` and gives `Bar<'a>`, you can write: f: impl for<'a> FnOnce(&'a Foo) -> Bar<'a>, However, it becomes tricky when you want that function to not have a fixed `Bar`, but have it be generic again. In this case, one needs something that is generic over types that are themselves generic over lifetimes. `ForLt` provides such support. It provides a trait `ForLt` which describes a type generic over a lifetime. One may use `ForLt::Of<'a>` to get an instance of a type for a specific lifetime. For the case of cross referencing, one would almost always want the lifetime to be covariant. Therefore this is also made a requirement for the `ForLt` trait, so functions with `ForLt` trait bound can assume covariance. A macro `ForLt!()` is provided to be able to obtain a type that implements `ForLt`. For example, `ForLt!(for<'a> Bar<'a>)` would yield a type that `<TheType as ForLt>::Of<'a>` is `Bar<'a>`. This also works with lifetime elision, e.g. `ForLt!(Bar<'_>)` or for types without lifetime at all, e.g. `ForLt!(u32)`. The API design draws inspiration from the higher-kinded-types [1] crate, however a different design decision has been taken (e.g. covariance requirement) and the implementation is independent. License headers use "Apache-2.0 OR MIT" because I anticipate this to be used in pin-init crate too which is licensed as such. 2026-04-07rust: allow globally `clippy::incompatible_msrv`Miguel Ojeda
`clippy::incompatible_msrv` is not buying us much, and we discussed allowing it several times in the past. For instance, there was recently another patch sent to `allow` it where needed [1]. While that particular case would not be needed after the minimum version bump to 1.85.0, it is simpler to just allow it to prevent future instances. [ In addition, the lint fired without taking into account the features that have been enabled in a crate [2]. While this was improved in Rust 1.90.0 [3], it would still fire in a case like this patch. ] Thus do so, and remove the last instance of locally allowing it we have in the tree (except the one in the vendored `proc_macro2` crate). Note that we still keep the `msrv` config option in `clippy.toml` since that affects other lints as well. Currently, we generate `HAS_` constants as long as the definition exists in the source, regardless if it is cfg-ed out or not. Currently, uses of `#[cfg]` present in both trait and impl, so it is not a problem; however if only the impl side uses `#[cfg]` then `HAS_` constants will incorrectly be true while it shouldnt't. With `syn` support, we can now implement `#[cfg]` handling properly by propagating the `#[cfg]` attributes to the constants. With `syn` being available in the kernel, use it to parse the complex custom `module!` macro to replace existing helpers. Only parsing is changed in this commit, the code generation is untouched. This has the benefit of better error message when the macro is used incorrectly, as it can point to a concrete span on what's going wrong. With `quote` crate now vendored in the kernel, we can remove our custom `quote!` macro implementation and just rely on that crate instead. The `quote` crate uses types from the `proc-macro2` library so we also update to use that, and perform conversion in the top-level lib.rs. Clippy complains about unnecessary `.to_string()` as `proc-macro2` provides additional `PartialEq` impl, so they are removed. 2025-11-07rust: macros: Add support for 'imports_ns' to module!Michal Wilczynski
Kernel modules that use C symbols exported via `EXPORT_SYMBOL_NS` must declare this dependency for `modpost` verification. C modules achieve this by using the `MODULE_IMPORT_NS(NAMESPACE)` macro, which embeds an `import_ns=<NAMESPACE>` tag into the `.modinfo` section. The Rust `module!` macro lacked the ability to generate these tags, resulting in build warnings for Rust drivers (like the PWM driver) that call namespaced C functions. Modify the `module!` macro's internal parser (`ModuleInfo`) to accept a new optional field `imports_ns`, which takes an array of namespace strings. Update the code generator (`ModInfoBuilder::emit`) loop to iterate over these strings and emit the corresponding `import_ns=<NAMESPACE>` tags into the `.modinfo` section using the existing `#[link_section]` mechanism. This provides the necessary infrastructure for Rust modules to correctly declare their C namespace dependencies. The `kunit_test` proc macro only checks for the `test` attribute immediately preceding a `fn`. If the function is disabled via a `cfg`, the generated code would result in a compile error referencing a non-existent function [1]. This collects attributes and specifically cherry-picks `cfg` attributes to be duplicated inside KUnit wrapper functions such that a test function disabled via `cfg` compiles and is marked as skipped in KUnit correctly. Starting with Rust 1.89.0 (expected 2025-08-07), the Rust compiler fails to build the `rusttest` target due to undefined references such as: kernel...-cgu.0:(.text....+0x116): undefined reference to `rust_helper_kunit_get_current_test' Moreover, tooling like `modpost` gets confused: WARNING: modpost: missing MODULE_DESCRIPTION() in drivers/gpu/drm/nova/nova.o ERROR: modpost: missing MODULE_LICENSE() in drivers/gpu/nova-core/nova_core.o The reason behind both issues is that the Rust compiler will now [1] treat `#[used]` as `#[used(linker)]` instead of `#[used(compiler)]` for our targets. This means that the retain section flag (`R`, `SHF_GNU_RETAIN`) will be used and that they will be marked as `unique` too, with different IDs. In turn, that means we end up with undefined references that did not get discarded in `rusttest` and that multiple `.modinfo` sections are generated, which confuse tooling like `modpost` because they only expect one. Thus start using `#[used(compiler)]` to keep the previous behavior and to be explicit about what we want. Sadly, it is an unstable feature (`used_with_arg`) [2] -- we will talk to upstream Rust about it. The good news is that it has been available for a long time (Rust >= 1.60) [3]. The changes should also be fine for previous Rust versions, since they behave the same way as before [4]. Alternatively, we could use `#[no_mangle]` or `#[export_name = ...]` since those still behave like `#[used(compiler)]`, but of course it is not really what we want to express, and it requires other changes to avoid symbol conflicts.
