Every devmem dmabuf binding today hands the page_pool PAGE_SIZE niovs.
This caps a single RX descriptor at PAGE_SIZE, burning CPU on buffer
churn for large flows.
Add a bind-time netlink attribute, NETDEV_A_DMABUF_RX_PAGE_SIZE, that
lets userspace request a larger niov size. The value must be a power of
two >= PAGE_SIZE.
The TX path is changed to always pass PAGE_SIZE.
Measurements:
Setup: kperf in devmem RX/TX cuda mode, 4 flows, 64 MB messages, 60s,
dctcp, num-rx-queues=4, dmabuf-rx/tx-size-mb=2048, 10 runs per niov
size, mlx5.
CPU Util:

be noise.

NETDEV_CMD_BIND_RX is currently GENL_ADMIN_PERM, which checks
CAP_NET_ADMIN against init userns. With recent container/netkit/ns
support for devmem, other userns/netns use cases come online and require
bind-rx to allow CAP_NET_ADMIN in non-init user ns as well.
Switch the flag to GENL_UNS_ADMIN_PERM to allow bind-rx for
CAP_NET_ADMIN in the netns's owning userns as well.

NIPA tries to make sure that HW tests don't modify system state.
It saves the state of page pools, too. Now that I write this commit
message I realize that this is impractical since page pool IDs and
state will get legitimately changed by the tests. But I already
spent a couple of hours implementing the filtering, so..

Add a ynl netdev family operation called queue-create that creates a
new queue on a netdevice:
name: queue-create
attribute-set: queue
flags: [admin-perm]
do:
request:
attributes:
- ifindex
- type
- lease
reply: &queue-create-op
attributes:
- id
This is a generic operation such that it can be extended for various
use cases in future. Right now it is mandatory to specify ifindex,
the queue type which is enforced to rx and a lease. The newly created
queue id is returned to the caller.
A queue from a virtual device can have a lease which refers to another
queue from a physical device. This is useful for memory providers
and AF_XDP operations which take an ifindex and queue id to allow
applications to bind against virtual devices in containers. The lease
couples both queues together and allows to proxy the operations from
a virtual device in a container to the physical device.
In future, the nested lease attribute can be lifted and made optional
for other use-cases such as dynamic queue creation for physical
netdevs. The lack of lease and the specification of the physical
device as an ifindex will imply that we need a real queue to be
allocated. Similarly, the queue type enforcement to rx can then be
lifted as well to support tx.
An early implementation had only driver-specific integration [0], but
in order for other virtual devices to reuse, it makes sense to have
this as a generic API in core net.
For leasing queues, the virtual netdev must have real_num_rx_queues
less than num_rx_queues at the time of calling queue-create. The
queue-type must be rx as only rx queues are supported for leasing
for now. We also enforce that the queue-create ifindex must point
to a virtual device, and that the nested lease attribute's ifindex
must point to a physical device. The nested lease attribute set
contains a netns-id attribute which is optional and can specify a
netns-id relative to the caller's netns. It requires cap_net_admin
and if the netns-id attribute is not specified, the lease ifindex
will be retrieved from the current netns. Also, it is modeled as
an s32 type similarly as done elsewhere in the stack.

The phrasing of the page-pool-get doc is very confusing.
It's supposed to highlight that support depends on the driver
doing its part but it sounds like orphaned page pools won't
be visible.
The description of the ifindex is completely wrong.
We move the page pool to loopback and skip the attribute if
ifindex is loopback.

Add a new state NAPI_STATE_THREADED_BUSY_POLL to the NAPI state enum to
enable and disable threaded busy polling.
When threaded busy polling is enabled for a NAPI, enable
NAPI_STATE_THREADED also.
When the threaded NAPI is scheduled, set NAPI_STATE_IN_BUSY_POLL to
signal napi_complete_done not to rearm interrupts.
Whenever NAPI_STATE_THREADED_BUSY_POLL is unset, the
NAPI_STATE_IN_BUSY_POLL will be unset, napi_complete_done unsets the
NAPI_STATE_SCHED_THREADED bit also, which in turn will make the kthread
go to sleep.

In YAML, it is allowed to declare a scalar strings at the next lines
without explicitly declaring them as a block. Yet, they looks weird, and
can cause issues when ':' or '#' are present.
The modified lines didn't have issues with the special characters, but
it seems better to explicitly declare such blocks as scalar strings to
encourage people to "properly" declare future scalar strings.
The right angle bracket is used with a minus sign to indicate that the
folded style should be used without adding extra newlines. By doing
that, the output is not changed compared to what was done before this
patch.

A net device has a threaded sysctl that can be used to enable threaded
NAPI polling on all of the NAPI contexts under that device. Allow
enabling threaded NAPI polling at individual NAPI level using netlink.
Extend the netlink operation `napi-set` and allow setting the threaded
attribute of a NAPI. This will enable the threaded polling on a NAPI
context.
Add a test in `nl_netdev.py` that verifies various cases of threaded
NAPI being set at NAPI and at device level.

Extend the XDP Tx metadata framework so that user can requests launch time
hardware offload, where the Ethernet device will schedule the packet for
transmission at a pre-determined time called launch time. The value of
launch time is communicated from user space to Ethernet driver via

Could be just me, but I had to pause and double check that the Tx csum
counter in qstat should include GSO'd packets. GSO pretty much implies
csum so one could possibly interpret the csum counter as pure csum offload.
But the counters are based on virtio:
[tx_needs_csum]
The number of packets which require checksum calculation by the device.
[rx_needs_csum]
The number of packets with VIRTIO_NET_HDR_F_NEEDS_CSUM.
and VIRTIO_NET_HDR_F_NEEDS_CSUM gets set on GSO packets virtio sends.
Clarify this in the spec to avoid any confusion.

Add a netdev_dmabuf_binding struct which represents the
dma-buf-to-netdevice binding. The netlink API will bind the dma-buf to
rx queues on the netdevice. On the binding, the dma_buf_attach
& dma_buf_map_attachment will occur. The entries in the sg_table from
mapping will be inserted into a genpool to make it ready
for allocation.
The chunks in the genpool are owned by a dmabuf_chunk_owner struct which
holds the dma-buf offset of the base of the chunk and the dma_addr of
the chunk. Both are needed to use allocations that come from this chunk.
We create a new type that represents an allocation from the genpool:
net_iov. We setup the net_iov allocation size in the
genpool to PAGE_SIZE for simplicity: to match the PAGE_SIZE normally
allocated by the page pool and given to the drivers.
The user can unbind the dmabuf from the netdevice by closing the netlink
socket that established the binding. We do this so that the binding is
automatically unbound even if the userspace process crashes.
The binding and unbinding leaves an indicator in struct netdev_rx_queue
that the given queue is bound, and the binding is actuated by resetting
the rx queue using the queue API.
The netdev_dmabuf_binding struct is refcounted, and releases its
resources only when all the refs are released.

Recent commit 0cfe71f45f42 ("netdev: add queue stats") added
a lot of useful stats, but only those immediately needed by virtio.
Presumably virtio does not support CHECKSUM_COMPLETE,
so statistic for that form of checksumming wasn't included.
Other drivers will definitely need it, in fact we expect it
to be needed in net-next soon (mlx5). So let's add the definition
of the counter for CHECKSUM_COMPLETE to uAPI in net already,
so that the counters are in a more natural order (all subsequent
counters have not been present in any released kernel, yet).

The ethtool-nl family does a good job exposing various protocol
related and IEEE/IETF statistics which used to get dumped under
ethtool -S, with creative names. Queue stats don't have a netlink
API, yet, and remain a lion's share of ethtool -S output for new
drivers. Not only is that bad because the names differ driver to
driver but it's also bug-prone. Intuitively drivers try to report
only the stats for active queues, but querying ethtool stats
involves multiple system calls, and the number of stats is
read separately from the stats themselves. Worse still when user
space asks for values of the stats, it doesn't inform the kernel
how big the buffer is. If number of stats increases in the meantime
kernel will overflow user buffer.
Add a netlink API for dumping queue stats. Queue information is
exposed via the netdev-genl family, so add the stats there.
Support per-queue and sum-for-device dumps. Latter will be useful
when subsequent patches add more interesting common stats than
just bytes and packets.
The API does not currently distinguish between HW and SW stats.
The expectation is that the source of the stats will either not
matter much (good packets) or be obvious (skb alloc errors).

Alexei Starovoitov says:
====================
pull-request: bpf-next 2023-12-18
This PR is larger than usual and contains changes in various parts
of the kernel.
The main changes are:
1) Fix kCFI bugs in BPF, from Peter Zijlstra.
End result: all forms of indirect calls from BPF into kernel
and from kernel into BPF work with CFI enabled. This allows BPF
to work with CONFIG_FINEIBT=y.
2) Introduce BPF token object, from Andrii Nakryiko.
It adds an ability to delegate a subset of BPF features from privileged
daemon (e.g., systemd) through special mount options for userns-bound
BPF FS to a trusted unprivileged application. The design accommodates
suggestions from Christian Brauner and Paul Moore.
Example:
$ sudo mkdir -p /sys/fs/bpf/token
$ sudo mount -t bpf bpffs /sys/fs/bpf/token \
-o delegate_cmds=prog_load:MAP_CREATE \
-o delegate_progs=kprobe \
-o delegate_attachs=xdp
3) Various verifier improvements and fixes, from Andrii Nakryiko, Andrei Matei.
- Complete precision tracking support for register spills
- Fix verification of possibly-zero-sized stack accesses
- Fix access to uninit stack slots
- Track aligned STACK_ZERO cases as imprecise spilled registers.
It improves the verifier "instructions processed" metric from single
digit to 50-60% for some programs.
- Fix verifier retval logic
4) Support for VLAN tag in XDP hints, from Larysa Zaremba.
5) Allocate BPF trampoline via bpf_prog_pack mechanism, from Song Liu.
End result: better memory utilization and lower I$ miss for calls to BPF
via BPF trampoline.
6) Fix race between BPF prog accessing inner map and parallel delete,
from Hou Tao.
7) Add bpf_xdp_get_xfrm_state() kfunc, from Daniel Xu.
It allows BPF interact with IPSEC infra. The intent is to support
software RSS (via XDP) for the upcoming ipsec pcpu work.
Experiments on AWS demonstrate single tunnel pcpu ipsec reaching
line rate on 100G ENA nics.
8) Expand bpf_cgrp_storage to support cgroup1 non-attach, from Yafang Shao.
9) BPF file verification via fsverity, from Song Liu.
It allows BPF progs get fsverity digest.

This change actually defines the (initial) metadata layout
that should be used by AF_XDP userspace (xsk_tx_metadata).
The first field is flags which requests appropriate offloads,
followed by the offload-specific fields. The supported per-device
offloads are exported via netlink (new xsk-flags).
The offloads themselves are still implemented in a bit of a
framework-y fashion that's left from my initial kfunc attempt.
I'm introducing new xsk_tx_metadata_ops which drivers are
supposed to implement. The drivers are also supposed
to call xsk_tx_metadata_request/xsk_tx_metadata_complete in
the right places. Since xsk_tx_metadata_{request,_complete}
are static inline, we don't incur any extra overhead doing
indirect calls.
The benefit of this scheme is as follows:
- keeps all metadata layout parsing away from driver code
- makes it easy to grep and see which drivers implement what
- don't need any extra flags to maintain to keep track of what
offloads are implemented; if the callback is implemented - the offload
is supported (used by netlink reporting code)
Two offloads are defined right now:
1. XDP_TXMD_FLAGS_CHECKSUM: skb-style csum_start+csum_offset
2. XDP_TXMD_FLAGS_TIMESTAMP: writes TX timestamp back into metadata
area upon completion (tx_timestamp field)
XDP_TXMD_FLAGS_TIMESTAMP is also implemented for XDP_COPY mode: it writes
SW timestamp from the skb destructor (note I'm reusing hwtstamps to pass
metadata pointer).
The struct is forward-compatible and can be extended in the future
by appending more fields.
