device exposure The driver currently exposes the IIO device to userspace before completing sensor hub callback registration, and similarly removes callbacks while the device can still be accessed during teardown. This creates a timing window where userspace may enable the buffer before callbacks are available. In such cases: - samples can be dropped, - buffered reads may observe stale or no data. Reorder probe and remove paths to ensure callbacks are active before device exposure and are removed after device is no longer accessible. This avoids a race window leading to data loss. 2026-06-29iio: hid-sensor-rotation: Fix stale or zero output when reading raw valuesZhang Lixu
When reading the raw quaternion attribute (in_rot_quaternion_raw), the driver currently returns either all zeros (if the sensor was never enabled) or stale data (if the sensor was previously enabled) because it reads from the internal buffer without explicitly requesting a new sample from the sensor. To fix this, power up the sensor, call sensor_hub_input_attr_read_values() to issue a synchronous GET_REPORT and receive the full quaternion data directly into a local buffer, then decode the four components. 2026-03-14iio: orientation: hid-sensor-rotation: add timestamp hack to not break userspaceDavid Lechner
Add a hack to push two timestamps in the hid-sensor-rotation scan data to avoid breaking userspace applications that depend on the timestamp being at the incorrect location in the scan data due to unintentional misalignment in older kernels. When this driver was written, the timestamp was in the correct location because of the way iio_compute_scan_bytes() was implemented at the time. (Samples were 24 bytes each.) Then commit 883f61653069 ("iio: buffer: align the size of scan bytes to size of the largest element") changed the computed scan_bytes to be a different size (32 bytes), which caused iio_push_to_buffers_with_timestamp() to place the timestamp at an incorrect offset. There have been long periods of time (6 years each) where the timestamp was in either location, so to not break either case, we open-code the timestamps to be pushed to both locations in the scan data. Restore the alignment of sampled_vals to 16 bytes by using IIO_DECLARE_QUATERNION(). This field contains a quaternion value which has scan_type.repeat = 4 and storagebits = 32. So the alignment must be 16 bytes to match the assumptions of iio_storage_bytes_for_si() and also to not break userspace. 2025-04-22iio: normalize array sentinel styleDavid Lechner
Use `\t(\{ ?\},|\{\}|\{\s*/\*.*\*/\s*\},?)$` regex to find and replace the array sentinel in all IIO drivers to the same style. For some time, we've been trying to consistently use `{ }` (no trailing comma, no comment, one space between braces) for array sentinels in the IIO subsystem. Still nearly 50% of existing code uses a different style. To save reviewers from having to request this trivial change as frequently, let's normalize the style in all existing IIO drivers. At least when code is copy/pasted to new drivers, the style will be consistent. 2024-10-10iio: Switch back to struct platform_driver::remove()Uwe Kleine-König
After commit 0edb555a65d1 ("platform: Make platform_driver::remove() return void") .remove() is (again) the right callback to implement for platform drivers. Convert all platform drivers below drivers/iio/ to use .remove(), with the eventual goal to drop struct platform_driver::remove_new(). 2023-09-23iio: orientation: hid-sensor-rotation: Convert to platform remove callback ↵Uwe Kleine-König
returning void The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is ignored (apart from emitting a warning) and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns void. Eventually after all drivers are converted, .remove_new() will be renamed to .remove(). 2021-05-10iio: hid-sensors: select IIO_TRIGGERED_BUFFER under HID_SENSOR_IIO_TRIGGERAlexandru Ardelean
During commit 067fda1c065ff ("iio: hid-sensors: move triggered buffer setup into hid_sensor_setup_trigger"), the iio_triggered_buffer_{setup,cleanup}() functions got moved under the hid-sensor-trigger module. The above change works fine, if any of the sensors get built. However, when only the common hid-sensor-trigger module gets built (and none of the drivers), then the IIO_TRIGGERED_BUFFER symbol isn't selected/enforced. Previously, each driver would enforce/select the IIO_TRIGGERED_BUFFER symbol. With this change the HID_SENSOR_IIO_TRIGGER (for the hid-sensor-trigger module) will enforce that IIO_TRIGGERED_BUFFER gets selected. All HID sensor drivers select the HID_SENSOR_IIO_TRIGGER symbol. So, this change removes the IIO_TRIGGERED_BUFFER enforcement from each driver. 2020-06-14iio: remove left-over parent assignmentsAlexandru Ardelean
These were found by doing some shell magic: ------------ for file in $(git grep -w devm_iio_device_alloc | cut -d: -f1 | sort | uniq) ; do if grep 'parent =' $file | grep -v trig | grep -vq devm_; then echo "$file -> $(grep "parent =" $file)" fi done ----------- The output is bearable [after the semantic patch is applied]. There is a mix of trigger assignments with some iio device parent assignments that are removed via this patch. JC: A few more added via inspection of all parent = statements in drivers/iio. Some of these may just have crossed with this series, others were less obvious to scripting due to some cross file / module boundary calls. 2020-06-14iio: remove explicit IIO device parent assignmentAlexandru Ardelean
This patch applies the semantic patch: @@ expression I, P, SP; @@ I = devm_iio_device_alloc(P, SP); ... - I->dev.parent = P; It updates 302 files and does 307 deletions. This semantic patch also removes some comments like '/* Establish that the iio_dev is a child of the i2c device */' But this is is only done in case where the block is left empty. The patch does not seem to cover all cases. It looks like in some cases a different variable is used in some cases to assign the parent, but it points to the same reference. In other cases, the block covered by ... may be just too big to be covered by the semantic patch. However, this looks pretty good as well, as it does cover a big bulk of the drivers that should remove the parent assignment. 2020-05-10iio: hid-sensors: move triggered buffer setup into hid_sensor_setup_triggerAlexandru Ardelean
The main intent here is to get rid of the iio_buffer_set_attrs() helper, or at least rework it's usage a bit. The problem with that helper is that it needs a pointer to the buffer, which makes supporting multiple buffers per IIO device a bit more cumbersome. The hid_sensor_setup_trigger() is pretty much used in the same way: - iio_triggered_buffer_setup() gets called before - then hid_sensor_setup_trigger() and hid_sensor_setup_batch_mode() gets called which may attach some fifo attributes This change merges the 2 together under the hid_sensor_setup_trigger() function. Only the &iio_pollfunc_store_time is passed to all devices, so it's not even required to pass it explicitly outside of the common hid_sensor_setup_trigger() function. Moving the devm_iio_triggered_buffer_setup/cleanup() calls into the common place code can help the rework of the buffer code, since it is in one place. One detail of the change is that there are 2 drivers that use devm_iio_triggered_buffer_setup(). That function gets implicitly replaced with iio_triggered_buffer_setup()/cleanup(), but since all drivers call both hid_sensor_setup_trigger9) & hid_sensor_remove_trigger() trigger, the iio_triggered_buffer_cleanup() piggy backs on the hid_sensor_remove_trigger() call, which should cover the cleanup.
