macvlan devices inherit hard_header_len from lowerdev during macvlan_init(),
but leave needed_headroom and needed_tailroom set to 0.
When the underlying lowerdev requires extra headroom or tailroom for
headers/trailers (e.g. macsec, ipsec, wireguard, tunnels, or veth with rx
headroom), upper layers calculating packet headroom and tailroom fail to
reserve sufficient space.
This can result in reallocation overhead, skb headroom underflows, or KASAN
slab-use-after-free crashes when dev_hard_header() / macvlan_hard_header()
prepends header data or when lower devices append tailroom.
Fix this by:
1. Inheriting needed_headroom and needed_tailroom from lowerdev in macvlan_init().
2. Propagating needed_headroom and needed_tailroom updates to attached macvlans
in macvlan_device_event() when receiving NETDEV_FEAT_CHANGE events.

struct macvlan_port is per lower device and is shared by every macvlan
upper on it, including uppers that live in other network namespaces.
Two of its fields are settable over rtnetlink by any upper on the port:
port->bc_cutoff, written by IFLA_MACVLAN_BC_CUTOFF, and
port->bc_queue_len_used, recomputed from IFLA_MACVLAN_BC_QUEUE_LEN.
(port->flags and port->perm_addr are also rtnetlink-settable, but only
in passthru mode, which requires port->count == 0 and so cannot be
reached from a second upper.)
rtnetlink checks CAP_NET_ADMIN against the network namespace the
configured device lives in and nothing else, so once a macvlan has been
moved into a child network namespace, an administrator of that namespace
alone reaches macvlan_changelink(), which applies both attributes
without considering who owns the lower device.
The create path has the same gap. macvlan_common_newlink() resolves a
lower device that is itself a macvlan to the real lower device:
if (netif_is_macvlan(lowerdev))
lowerdev = macvlan_dev_real_dev(lowerdev);
That real device may sit in a network namespace that was never
capability-checked. The new upper then joins its macvlan_port and runs
update_port_bc_queue_len() on it, and, when IFLA_MACVLAN_BC_CUTOFF is
present, update_port_bc_cutoff().
port->bc_cutoff is not a local tuning knob. update_port_bc_cutoff()
recomputes port->bc_filter, which macvlan_handle_frame() tests to decide
whether a multicast frame is deferred to the port broadcast work queue
or flooded inline from the RX softirq, and a negative cutoff clears
bc_filter outright. A namespace that administers none of the other
uppers can therefore change how all of them receive multicast.
Reproduced on 6.8 with a dummy lower device and two macvlan uppers, one
left in the initial namespace and one moved into a child user and
network namespace. From the child, both a changelink and a nested
newlink carrying IFLA_MACVLAN_BC_CUTOFF were accepted, and the value
read back on the initial-namespace sibling followed them, changing from
1 to -7 and then to -42.
Require CAP_NET_ADMIN in the lower device network namespace before
applying a shared port setting or creating a macvlan on a flattened
lower device. rtnl_dev_link_net_capable() short-circuits when the lower
device shares the macvlan network namespace, so an ordinary
single-namespace configuration is unaffected, and per-upper settings
such as mode and flags stay available to an administrator of the
macvlan's own namespace. This is the model ipvlan has used since
commit 7cc9f7003a96 ("ipvlan: disallow userns cap_net_admin to change
global mode/flags").
Found by 0sec automated security-research tooling (https://0sec.ai).
The newlink gate is unconditional rather than keyed on a BC attribute
being present, because joining another namespace's macvlan_port is
itself a mutation of shared state; ipvlan gates ipvlan_link_new() the
same way.
IFLA_MACVLAN_BC_QUEUE_LEN is gated here as well as by any magnitude
check, because the two address different things: a magnitude check
bounds how large a value any caller may request, while this bounds who
may write the shared port at all. update_port_bc_queue_len() takes the
maximum across uppers, so a cross-namespace lowering has no security
effect and this over-rejects it; that is accepted in exchange for one
rule covering every writer of the shared struct.

macvlan_init_module() ignores register_netdevice_notifier() errors and
continues module initialization, which can leave macvlan loaded without
its netdev notifier registered.
Check the error and fail module initialization early.
This is a future looking check, register_netdevice_notifier()
only fails on double registration or if the registered notifier
itself returns an error.

IFLA_MACVLAN_BC_QUEUE_LEN accepts any u32 and becomes
port->bc_queue_len_used, the only bound on port->bc_queue. rtnetlink checks
CAP_NET_ADMIN against the target netns only, so a user who unshares a
user+net namespace, creates a veth and puts a macvlan on it can set the
backlog to 0xffffffff and flood broadcast frames until the host dies:
Out of memory: Killed process 141 (su) UID:0
Kernel panic - not syncing: System is deadlocked on memory

folio_alloc_noprof (mm/mempolicy.c:2591)
filemap_fault (mm/filemap.c:3565)
A fixed upper bound does not work. Deployments carrying 600-800 real-time
audio streams run bc_queue_len=100000, and no constant serves both cases:
the queue counts skbs, not bytes, and the frame size is attacker-chosen too
(up to ETH_MAX_MTU on a veth the caller creates).
Gate the elevated range on CAP_NET_ADMIN in the initial user namespace
instead. A backlog of that size is a host-wide tuning decision, and an
unprivileged owner of a namespace it created itself should not be able to
make it; privileged configurations keep working unchanged..

macvlan_get_size() does not account for IFLA_MACVLAN_BC_CUTOFF, but
macvlan_fill_info() conditionally includes it when port->bc_cutoff != 1.
This causes nla_put_s32() to fail with -EMSGSIZE when the netlink skb
runs out of space, triggering a WARN_ON in rtnetlink and preventing the
interface from being dumped.
The bug can be reproduced with:
ip link add macvlan0 link eth0 type macvlan mode bridge
ip link set macvlan0 type macvlan bc_cutoff 0
ip -d link show macvlan0 # fails with -EMSGSIZE
The bc_cutoff feature was added in commit 954d1fa1ac93 ("macvlan: Add
netlink attribute for broadcast cutoff"), which added the nla_put_s32()
call in macvlan_fill_info() but missed adding the corresponding
nla_total_size(4) in macvlan_get_size(). A follow-up commit
55cef78c244d ("macvlan: add forgotten nla_policy for
IFLA_MACVLAN_BC_CUTOFF") fixed the missing nla_policy entry but still
did not fix the size calculation.

ipvlan and macvlan use queues to process broadcast/multicast packets
from a work queue.
Under attack these queues can drop packets.
Add MACVLAN_BROADCAST_BACKLOG drop_reason for macvlan broadcast queue.
Add IPVLAN_MULTICAST_BACKLOG drop_reason for ipvlan multicast queue.
Use different reasons as some deployments use both ipvlan and macvlan.

Macvlan bridge mode currently does not handle the case where an
external source shares its MAC address with a local macvlan interface.
When such a frame arrives, macvlan_hash_lookup() matches the source
MAC to the local macvlan, and macvlan_multicast_rx() assumes bridge
ports already received the frame during local transmission. Since the
frame actually originated externally, bridge ports never saw it.
This situation arises with protocols like VRRP, where multiple hosts
use the same virtual MAC address.
Support this by passing NULL as the source device and including
MACVLAN_MODE_BRIDGE in the mode mask for the else branch of
macvlan_multicast_rx(). This ensures all VEPA and bridge mode macvlan
interfaces receive incoming multicast regardless of source MAC
matching. The trade-off is that looped-back locally-originated
multicasts may be delivered to bridge ports a second time, but
multicast consumers already handle duplicate frames.

This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using
git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'
to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.
Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.
For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate
conversion.

This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:
Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)
Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)
Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)
(where TYPE may also be *VAR)
The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

He also gave a very detailed analysis:
<quote valis>
The issue is triggered when a new macvlan link is created with
MACVLAN_MODE_SOURCE mode and MACVLAN_MACADDR_ADD (or
MACVLAN_MACADDR_SET) parameter, lower device already has a macvlan
port and register_netdevice() called from macvlan_common_newlink()
fails (e.g. because of the invalid link name).
In this case macvlan_hash_add_source is called from
macvlan_change_sources() / macvlan_common_newlink():
This adds a reference to vlan to the port's vlan_source_hash using
macvlan_source_entry.
vlan is a pointer to the priv data of the link that is being created.
When register_netdevice() fails, the error is returned from
macvlan_newlink() to rtnl_newlink_create():
if (ops->newlink)
err = ops->newlink(dev, ¶ms, extack);
else
err = register_netdevice(dev);
if (err < 0) {
free_netdev(dev);
goto out;
}
and free_netdev() is called, causing a kvfree() on the struct
net_device that is still referenced in the source entry attached to
the lower device's macvlan port.
Now all packets sent on the macvlan port with a matching source mac
address will trigger a use-after-free in macvlan_forward_source().
</quote valis>
With all that, my fix is to make sure we call macvlan_flush_sources()
regardless of @create value whenever "goto destroy_macvlan_port;"
path is taken.

Whenever macvlan_hash_del_source() is called, we must clear

Currently if a user enqueue a work item using schedule_delayed_work() the
used wq is "system_wq" (per-cpu wq) while queue_delayed_work() use
WORK_CPU_UNBOUND (used when a cpu is not specified). The same applies to
schedule_work() that is using system_wq and queue_work(), that makes use
again of WORK_CPU_UNBOUND.
This lack of consistentcy cannot be addressed without refactoring the API.
system_unbound_wq should be the default workqueue so as not to enforce
locality constraints for random work whenever it's not required.
Adding system_dfl_wq to encourage its use when unbound work should be used.
The old system_unbound_wq will be kept for a few release cycles.

and makes rebuilding the kernel much faster (after touching
the header with the helpers).
The main netdev_lock() / netdev_unlock() functions are used
in static inlines in netdevice.h and will probably be used
most commonly, so keep them in netdevice.h.

There are 4 net namespaces involved when creating links:
- source netns - where the netlink socket resides,
- target netns - where to put the device being created,
- link netns - netns associated with the device (backend),
- peer netns - netns of peer device.
Currently, two nets are passed to newlink() callback - "src_net"
parameter and "dev_net" (implicitly in net_device). They are set as
follows, depending on netlink attributes in the request.
+------------+-------------------+---------+---------+
| peer netns | IFLA_LINK_NETNSID | src_net | dev_net |
+------------+-------------------+---------+---------+
| | absent | source | target |
| absent +-------------------+---------+---------+
| | present | link | link |
+------------+-------------------+---------+---------+
| | absent | peer | target |
| present +-------------------+---------+---------+
| | present | peer | link |
+------------+-------------------+---------+---------+
When IFLA_LINK_NETNSID is present, the device is created in link netns
first and then moved to target netns. This has some side effects,
including extra ifindex allocation, ifname validation and link events.
These could be avoided if we create it in target netns from
the beginning.
On the other hand, the meaning of src_net parameter is ambiguous. It
varies depending on how parameters are passed. It is the effective
link (or peer netns) by design, but some drivers ignore it and use
dev_net instead.
To provide more netns context for drivers, this patch packs existing
newlink() parameters, along with the source netns, link netns and peer
netns, into a struct. The old "src_net" is renamed to "net" to avoid
confusion with real source netns, and will be deprecated later. The use
of src_net are converted to params->net trivially.

Currently when FDB entries are added to or deleted from a VXLAN netdevice,
the VXLAN driver emits one notification, including the VXLAN-specific
attributes. The core however always sends a notification as well, a generic
one. Thus two notifications are unnecessarily sent for these operations. A
similar situation comes up with bridge driver, which also emits
notifications on its own:
# ip link add name vx type vxlan id 1000 dstport 4789
# bridge monitor fdb &
[1] 1981693
# bridge fdb add de:ad:be:ef:13:37 dev vx self dst 192.0.2.1
de:ad:be:ef:13:37 dev vx dst 192.0.2.1 self permanent
de:ad:be:ef:13:37 dev vx self permanent
In order to prevent this duplicity, add a paremeter to ndo_fdb_add,
bool *notified. The flag is primed to false, and if the callee sends a
notification on its own, it sets it to true, thus informing the core that
it should not generate another notification.

which accesses these bits with no optimization loss (testb both
before/after), allows to not extend &netdev_priv_flags each time,
but also scales better as bits > 63 in the future would only add
a new u64 to the structure with no complications, comparing to
that extending ::priv_flags would require converting it to a bitmap.

already started operating on an extensible kernel variant of that
structure, similar in concept to struct kernel_hwtstamp_config vs struct

Since struct ethtool_ts_info is in include/uapi/linux/ethtool.h, here
we introduce the kernel-only structure in include/linux/ethtool.h.

macvlan is one of the stackable net devices which pass the hardware
timestamping ops to the real device through ndo_eth_ioctl(). This
prevents converting any device driver to the new hwtimestamping API
without regressions.
Remove that limitation in macvlan by using the newly introduced helpers
for timestamping through lower devices, that handle both the new and the
old driver API.
macvlan only implements ndo_eth_ioctl() for these 2 operations, so

The previous commit 954d1fa1ac93 ("macvlan: Add netlink attribute for
broadcast cutoff") added one additional attribute named
IFLA_MACVLAN_BC_CUTOFF to allow broadcast cutfoff.
However, it forgot to describe the nla_policy at macvlan_policy
(drivers/net/macvlan.c). Hence, this suppose NLA_S32 (4 bytes) integer
can be faked as empty (0 bytes) by a malicious user, which could leads
to OOB in heap just like CVE-2023-3773.
To fix it, this commit just completes the nla_policy description for
IFLA_MACVLAN_BC_CUTOFF. This enforces the length check and avoids the
potential OOB read.

Sorry, I made an error and posted my patches from an earlier
revision so a follow-up fix was missing:
---8<---
The bc_cutoff patch broke the calculation of mc_filter causing
some multicast packets to not make it through to the targeted
device.
Fix this by checking whether vlan is set instead of cutoff >= 0.
Also move the cutoff < 0 logic into macvlan_recompute_bc_filter
so that it doesn't change the mc_filter at all.

Make the broadcast cutoff configurable through netlink. Note
that macvlan is weird because there is no central device for
us to configure (the lowerdev could be anything). So all the
options are duplicated over what could be thousands of child
devices.
IFLA_MACVLAN_BC_QUEUE_LEN took the approach of taking the maximum
of all child device settings. This is unnecessary as we could
simply store the option in the port device and take the last
child device that gets updated as the value to use.

As it stands all broadcast and multicast packets are queued and
processed in a work queue. This is so that we don't overwhelm
the receive softirq path by generating thousands of packets or
more (see commit 412ca1550cbe "macvlan: Move broadcasts into a
work queue").
As such all multicast packets will be delayed, even if they will
be received by a single macvlan device. As using a workqueue
is not free in terms of latency, we should avoid this where possible.
This patch adds a new filter to determine which addresses should
be delayed and which ones won't. This is done using a crude
counter of how many times an address has been added to the macvlan
port (ha->synced). For now if an address has been added more than
once, then it will be considered to be broadcast. This could be
tuned further by making this threshold configurable.
