2026-07-30net: mctp: usb: Allow multiple urbs in flightJeremy Kerr
Currently, we stop tx queues when we have one urb submitted. This means we will immediately hit dev_hard_start_xmit's tx-queues-off -> NETDEV_TX_BUSY case, and revert to the requeue -> gso_skb single-dequeue path, and no longer be able to pack skbs without an xmit_more indication. Instead, allow a few urbs to be in-flight, with a limit of 16kB of data outstanding (after which we will disable queues). With this, the tx path will cause fewer requeues (and therefore non-packed transfers) under normal loads. 2026-07-30net: mctp: usblib: Implement transmit-side packet spanningJeremy Kerr
Add support for packet spanning as defined in DSP0283 v1.1. With the existing v1.0 implementation of multi-packet transfers, all we need here is to adjust the buffer sizes to suit v1.1. 2026-07-30net: mctp: usblib: Implement receive-side packet spanningJeremy Kerr
Using the existing prepare/complete API, we can persist the rx skb across receives to implement v1.1 packet spanning. Alter the packet-extraction loop to allow truncated packets, returning early with the skb persisted for the next IN urb completion. When we see we have a complete packet, netif_rx() that. If the packet boundary aligns with the urb completion, we can netif_rx() the whole thing. Those intermediate packets are cloned from the original (large-transfer-data) skb. Unlike existing behaviour, if the clone fails, we drop just that clone, instead of the existing transfer skb. This allows us to process the rest of the skb data, and any continuation of the span into the next transfer. One subtle change: the mctp_usblib_rx() helper now handles skbs with the full transport header, so we shift the skb_pull() for the header data to the helper, before doing the rx_bytes stats update. We still need to handle non-spanning mode, so error out on truncated-packet cases there. 2026-07-30net: mctp: usb: Accommodate DSP0283 v1.1 header formatJeremy Kerr
In the v1.1 update to DSP0283, we have a larger header field, of 13 bits rather than 8. In order to accommodate this, in preparation for proper v1.1 support, expand our struct mctp_usb_hdr's len field to a u16, and endian-convert when necessary. Because we don't yet support spanning mode, we will never receive or transmit with the top 5 bits set, so we always mask out anyway. This allows for a future change where we allow spanning mode with >512-byte transfers. 2026-07-30net: mctp: usblib: Add support for multi-packet transmitJeremy Kerr
The MCTP over USB spec allows us to pack multiple packets in one transfer. Given the packet max length is 255, and the transfer max length is 512, we can typically include two full-size packets per urb submission. To do this, we allow a struct mctp_usb_tx to persist a tx_ctx, representing the ongoing context for a transmit. If possible, a TX skb will be queued to the context and the send deferred until the context is full, or the device queue reports no more packets. This typically requires a linear buffer for the 512-byte TX, which we allocate along with the TX context. 2026-07-30net: mctp: usblib: Move TX transfer processing to mctp-usblibJeremy Kerr
With the RX processing in mctp-usblib, add TX processing alongside. To accommodate packed transfers in DSP0283, where a transfer may contain multiple MCTP packets, we move to a split process for the transmit API: * push: create a new transmit context, and add a skb to it. * send: callback to the driver implementation to send the (possibly multi-packet) USB transfer * complete: update skb accounting and release the tx context The actual multi-packet transfer implementation will be added in the next change; no tx context persists beyond the single send at present. However, we use an anchor in the host driver implementation to track the submitted TX urb when necessary. While we're here, fix an inconsistency between tx and rx stats: both should not include the transport header. 2026-07-30net: mctp: usb: Improve IN endpoint status handlingJeremy Kerr
Currently, we give-up on all non-zero status values on our IN/rx urb, and do not re-queue the urb. This will stall the driver, and prevent any further receive. Instead, attempt a re-queue on transient errors, with a max of ten successive failures. Handle EPIPE specially, by scheduling a usb_clear_halt() in non-atomic context. 2026-07-30net: mctp: usblib: Move RX transfer processing to a new mctp-usblibJeremy Kerr
The processing of USB receive transfers is common to both sides of a MCTP over USB transport. In order to support a future gadget driver, move the current host-side driver into a new common file, mctp-usblib. This currently handles the submit-complete-packetise process of the receive path of the USB transport. We'll add transmit handling in an upcoming change. 2026-07-30net: mctp: usb: Use packet-length max for maximum packet-size checkJeremy Kerr

2026-07-23mctp: serial: handle zero-length frames to prevent rx buffer overflowDoruk Tan Ozturk
The MCTP serial receive state machine reads a frame length byte in mctp_serial_push_header() case 2 and validates it upper-bound-only: if (c > MCTP_SERIAL_FRAME_MTU) { dev->rxstate = STATE_ERR; } else { dev->rxlen = c; dev->rxpos = 0; dev->rxstate = STATE_DATA; ... } A length of zero passes this check, so rxlen is set to 0 and the state machine advances to STATE_DATA. In mctp_serial_push() STATE_DATA, the incoming byte is stored and rxpos incremented before the terminator is tested: dev->rxbuf[dev->rxpos] = c; dev->rxpos++; dev->rxstate = STATE_DATA; if (dev->rxpos == dev->rxlen) { dev->rxpos = 0; dev->rxstate = STATE_TRAILER; } With rxlen == 0 the "rxpos == rxlen" terminator can never fire (rxpos is already 1 on the first data byte), so subsequent bytes are written past the end of the fixed 74-byte rxbuf, which is the last member of the netdev private area. Every following data byte is an attacker-controlled 1-byte out-of-bounds heap write, and the overflow continues until a frame (0x7e) or escape byte resets the parser -- effectively unbounded. Reaching this requires CAP_NET_ADMIN to attach the N_MCTP line discipline and bring the resulting mctpserialN netdev up, after which the bytes arrive via the tty receive path. Route a zero-length frame straight to STATE_TRAILER instead of STATE_DATA. The trailer/framing bytes are still consumed, and the frame resolves to a zero-length skb that the MCTP core rejects; the parser never enters STATE_DATA with rxlen == 0, so the out-of-bounds write can no longer occur. 2026-07-21net: mctp i3c: clean up notifier and buses if driver register failsMyeonghun Pak
mctp_i3c_mod_init() registers the I3C bus notifier and then walks the existing buses with i3c_for_each_bus_locked(mctp_i3c_bus_add_new, NULL) before registering the I3C device driver. If i3c_driver_register() fails, the function returns the error directly, leaving the notifier registered and every mctp_i3c_bus object created for the existing buses allocated. The notifier is left pointing into the module that failed to load and the bus list is leaked. Mirror the module exit path on this failure: unregister the notifier and tear down the buses that were added before returning the error. This issue was identified during our ongoing static-analysis research while reviewing kernel code. 2026-06-09net: mctp: usb: don't fail mctp_usb_rx_queue on a deferred submissionJeremy Kerr
In the ndo_open path, a deferred queue open will report a failure, and so the netdev will not be ndo_stop()ed, leaving us with the rx_retry work potentially pending. Don't report a deferred queue as an error, as we are still operational. This means we use the ndo_stop() path for future cleanup, which handles rx_retry_work cancellation. 2026-06-09net: mctp: usb: fix race between urb completion and rx_retry cancellationJeremy Kerr
It's possible that sequencing between setting ->stopped and cancelling the rx_retry work (in ndo_stop) could leave us with an urb queued: T1: ndo_stop T2: rx_retry_work ------------ ---------------- LD: ->stopped => false ST: ->stopped <= true usb_kill_urb() mctp_usb_rx_queue() usb_submit_urb() cancel_delayed_work_sync() That urb completion can then re-schedule rx_retry_work. Strenghen the sequencing between the stop (preventing another requeue) and the cancel by updating both atomically under a new rx lock. After setting ->rx_stopped, and cancelling pending work, we know that the requeue cannot occur, so all that's left is killing any pending urb. 2026-05-20mctp: i2c: Use named initializers for struct i2c_device_idUwe Kleine-König (The Capable Hub)
While being less compact, using named initializers allows to more easily see which members of the structs are assigned which value without having to lookup the declaration of the struct. And it's also more robust against changes to the struct definition. This patch doesn't modify the compiled arrays, only their representation in source form benefits. The former was confirmed with x86 and arm64 builds. While touching this array, unify usage of whitespace in the list terminator to what most other arrays are using. 2026-04-28net: mctp i2c: check length before marking flow activeWilliam A. Kennington III
Currently, mctp_i2c_get_tx_flow_state() is called before the packet length sanity check. This function marks a new flow as active in the MCTP core. If the sanity check fails, mctp_i2c_xmit() returns early without calling mctp_i2c_lock_nest(). This results in a mismatched locking state: the flow is active, but the I2C bus lock was never acquired for it. When the flow is later released, mctp_i2c_release_flow() will see the active state and queue an unlock marker. The TX thread will then decrement midev->i2c_lock_count from 0, causing it to underflow to -1. This underflow permanently breaks the driver's locking logic, allowing future transmissions to occur without holding the I2C bus lock, leading to bus collisions and potential hardware hangs. Move the mctp_i2c_get_tx_flow_state() call to after the length sanity check to ensure we only transition the flow state if we are actually going to proceed with the transmission and locking. 2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. 2025-10-29net: mctp: Fix tx queue stallJinliang Wang
The tx queue can become permanently stuck in a stopped state due to a race condition between the URB submission path and its completion callback. The URB completion callback can run immediately after usb_submit_urb() returns, before the submitting function calls netif_stop_queue(). If this occurs, the queue state management becomes desynchronized, leading to a stall where the queue is never woken. Fix this by moving the netif_stop_queue() call to before submitting the URB. 2025-03-26mctp: Fix incorrect tx flow invalidation condition in mctp-i2cDaniel Hsu
Previously, the condition for invalidating the tx flow in mctp_i2c_invalidate_tx_flow() checked if `rc` was nonzero. However, this could incorrectly trigger the invalidation even when `rc > 0` was returned as a success status. This patch updates the condition to explicitly check for `rc < 0`, ensuring that only error cases trigger the invalidation. 2025-02-21net: mctp: Add MCTP USB transport driverJeremy Kerr
Add an implementation for DMTF DSP0283, which defines a MCTP-over-USB transport. As per that spec, we're restricted to full speed mode, requiring 512-byte transfers. Each MCTP-over-USB interface is a peer-to-peer link to a single MCTP endpoint, so no physical addressing is required (of course, that MCTP endpoint may then bridge to further MCTP endpoints). Consequently, interfaces will report with no lladdr data: # mctp link dev lo index 1 address 00:00:00:00:00:00 net 1 mtu 65536 up dev mctpusb0 index 6 address none net 1 mtu 68 up This is a simple initial implementation, with single rx & tx urbs, and no multi-packet tx transfers - although we do accept multi-packet rx from the device. 2025-01-09mctp i3c: fix MCTP I3C driver multi-thread issueLeo Yang
We found a timeout problem with the pldm command on our system. The reason is that the MCTP-I3C driver has a race condition when receiving multiple-packet messages in multi-thread, resulting in a wrong packet order problem. We identified this problem by adding a debug message to the mctp_i3c_read function. According to the MCTP spec, a multiple-packet message must be composed in sequence, and if there is a wrong sequence, the whole message will be discarded and wait for the next SOM. For example, SOM → Pkt Seq #2 → Pkt Seq #1 → Pkt Seq #3 → EOM. Therefore, we try to solve this problem by adding a mutex to the mctp_i3c_read function. Before the modification, when a command requesting a multiple-packet message response is sent consecutively, an error usually occurs within 100 loops. After the mutex, it can go through 40000 loops without any error, and it seems to run well. 2024-11-09net: mctp: Expose transport binding identifier via IFLA attributeKhang Nguyen
MCTP control protocol implementations are transport binding dependent. Endpoint discovery is mandatory based on transport binding. Message timing requirements are specified in each respective transport binding specification. However, we currently have no means to get this information from MCTP links. Add a IFLA_MCTP_PHYS_BINDING netlink link attribute, which represents the transport type using the DMTF DSP0239-defined type numbers, returned as part of RTM_GETLINK data. We get an IFLA_MCTP_PHYS_BINDING attribute for each MCTP link, for example: - 0x00 (unspec) for loopback interface; - 0x01 (SMBus/I2C) for mctpi2c%d interfaces; and - 0x05 (serial) for mctpserial%d interfaces. 2024-09-01net: mctp-serial: Fix missing escapes on transmitMatt Johnston
0x7d and 0x7e bytes are meant to be escaped in the data portion of frames, but this didn't occur since next_chunk_len() had an off-by-one error. That also resulted in the final byte of a payload being written as a separate tty write op. The chunk prior to an escaped byte would be one byte short, and the next call would never test the txpos+1 case, which is where the escaped byte was located. That meant it never hit the escaping case in mctp_serial_tx_work(). Example Input: 01 00 08 c8 7e 80 02 Previous incorrect chunks from next_chunk_len(): 01 00 08 c8 7e 80 02 With this fix: 01 00 08 c8 7e 80 02 Cc: stable@vger.kernel.org Fixes: a0c2ccd9b5ad ("mctp: Add MCTP-over-serial transport binding") Signed-off-by: Matt Johnston <matt@codeconstruct.com.au> Signed-off-by: David S. 2024-07-12net: mctp-i2c: invalidate flows immediately on TX errorsJeremy Kerr
If we encounter an error on i2c packet transmit, we won't have a valid flow anymore; since we didn't transmit a valid packet sequence, we'll have to wait for the key to timeout instead of dropping it on the reply.
