2026-07-30net: phy: micrel: Add loopback support for ksz9131Maxime Chevallier
ksz9131 is configured for local loopback in a similar fashion as the ksz9031, with a need for full-duplex operation, but with some extra steps to take as specified in section 4.13.1 : 1. Configure the following registers: - MMD 1C, Register 15 = EEEE - MMD 1C, Register 16 = EEEE - MMD 1C, Register 18 = EEEE - MMD 1C, Register 1B = EEEE These 4 registers are marked as "Reserved" in the register map. When setting loopback up without configuring these 4 registers, the PHY appears to shut its RXC down, which can trigger failures on MACs that require it, such as stmmac. The datasheet does not specify to which state the registers must be reset when disabling loopback, so let's restore them to their measured initial values. This was discovered when trying to use stmmac selftests on imx8mp with a ksz9131 connected in RGMII. 2026-06-11net: phy: micrel: expose KSZ87xx low-loss cable tunablesFidelio Lawson
Add support for the KSZ87xx low-loss cable PHY tunables in the Micrel PHY driver by implementing get_tunable and set_tunable callbacks. These callbacks expose vendor-specific PHY tunables used to control the KSZ87xx embedded PHY receiver behavior when operating with short or low-loss Ethernet cables. The tunables provide: - a boolean short-cable preset applying known good settings; - an integer LPF bandwidth control; - an integer DSP EQ initial value control. The Micrel PHY driver forwards these tunables via standard phy_read() / phy_write() operations, which are virtualized by the KSZ8 DSA driver and translated into the appropriate indirect switch register accesses. 2026-04-30net: phy: micrel: fix LAN8814 QSGMII soft resetRobert Marko
LAN8814 QSGMII soft reset was moved into the probe function to avoid triggering it for each of 4 PHY-s in the package. However, that broke QSGMII link between the MAC and PHY on most LAN8814 PHY-s, specificaly for us on the Microchip LAN969x switch. Reading the QSGMII status registers it was visible that lanes were only partially synced. It looks like the reset timing is crucial, so lets move the reset back into the .config_init function but guard it with phy_package_init_once() to avoid it being triggered on each of 4 PHY-s in the package. Change the probe function to use phy_package_probe_once() for coma and PtP setup. 2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate conversion. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2026-02-21treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar typesKees Cook
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) (where TYPE may also be *VAR) The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning "TYPE *". Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <kees@kernel.org>

2026-01-28net: phy: micrel: fix clk warning when removing the driverWei Fang
Since the commit 25c6a5ab151f ("net: phy: micrel: Dynamically control external clock of KSZ PHY"), the clock of Micrel PHY has been enabled by phy_driver::resume() and disabled by phy_driver::suspend(). However, devm_clk_get_optional_enabled() is used in kszphy_probe(), so the clock will automatically be disabled when the device is unbound from the bus. Therefore, this could cause the clock to be disabled twice, resulting in clk driver warnings. For example, this issue can be reproduced on i.MX6ULL platform, and we can see the following logs when removing the FEC MAC drivers. $ echo 2188000.ethernet > /sys/bus/platform/drivers/fec/unbind $ echo 20b4000.ethernet > /sys/bus/platform/drivers/fec/unbind [ 109.758207] ------------[ cut here ]------------ [ 109.758240] WARNING: drivers/clk/clk.c:1188 at clk_core_disable+0xb4/0xd0, CPU#0: sh/639 [ 109.771011] enet2_ref already disabled [ 109.793359] Call trace: [ 109.822006] clk_core_disable from clk_disable+0x28/0x34 [ 109.827340] clk_disable from clk_disable_unprepare+0xc/0x18 [ 109.833029] clk_disable_unprepare from devm_clk_release+0x1c/0x28 [ 109.839241] devm_clk_release from devres_release_all+0x98/0x100 [ 109.845278] devres_release_all from device_unbind_cleanup+0xc/0x70 [ 109.851571] device_unbind_cleanup from device_release_driver_internal+0x1a4/0x1f4 [ 109.859170] device_release_driver_internal from bus_remove_device+0xbc/0xe4 [ 109.866243] bus_remove_device from device_del+0x140/0x458 [ 109.871757] device_del from phy_mdio_device_remove+0xc/0x24 [ 109.877452] phy_mdio_device_remove from mdiobus_unregister+0x40/0xac [ 109.883918] mdiobus_unregister from fec_enet_mii_remove+0x40/0x78 [ 109.890125] fec_enet_mii_remove from fec_drv_remove+0x4c/0x158 [ 109.896076] fec_drv_remove from device_release_driver_internal+0x17c/0x1f4 [ 109.962748] WARNING: drivers/clk/clk.c:1047 at clk_core_unprepare+0xfc/0x13c, CPU#0: sh/639 [ 109.975805] enet2_ref already unprepared [ 110.002866] Call trace: [ 110.031758] clk_core_unprepare from clk_unprepare+0x24/0x2c [ 110.037440] clk_unprepare from devm_clk_release+0x1c/0x28 [ 110.042957] devm_clk_release from devres_release_all+0x98/0x100 [ 110.048989] devres_release_all from device_unbind_cleanup+0xc/0x70 [ 110.055280] device_unbind_cleanup from device_release_driver_internal+0x1a4/0x1f4 [ 110.062877] device_release_driver_internal from bus_remove_device+0xbc/0xe4 [ 110.069950] bus_remove_device from device_del+0x140/0x458 [ 110.075469] device_del from phy_mdio_device_remove+0xc/0x24 [ 110.081165] phy_mdio_device_remove from mdiobus_unregister+0x40/0xac [ 110.087632] mdiobus_unregister from fec_enet_mii_remove+0x40/0x78 [ 110.093836] fec_enet_mii_remove from fec_drv_remove+0x4c/0x158 [ 110.099782] fec_drv_remove from device_release_driver_internal+0x17c/0x1f4 After analyzing the process of removing the FEC driver, as shown below, it can be seen that the clock was disabled twice by the PHY driver. fec_drv_remove() --> fec_enet_close() --> phy_stop() --> phy_suspend() --> kszphy_suspend() #1 The clock is disabled --> fec_enet_mii_remove() --> mdiobus_unregister() --> phy_mdio_device_remove() --> device_del() --> devm_clk_release() #2 The clock is disabled again Therefore, devm_clk_get_optional() is used to fix the above issue. And to avoid the issue mentioned by the commit 985329462723 ("net: phy: micrel: use devm_clk_get_optional_enabled for the rmii-ref clock"), the clock is enabled by clk_prepare_enable() to get the correct clock rate. 2025-11-03net: phy: micrel: add MSE interface support for KSZ9477 familyOleksij Rempel
Implement the get_mse_capability() and get_mse_snapshot() PHY driver ops for KSZ9477-series integrated PHYs to demonstrate the new PHY MSE UAPI. These PHYs do not expose a documented direct MSE register, but the Signal Quality Indicator (SQI) registers are derived from the internal MSE computation. This hook maps SQI readings into the MSE interface so that tooling can retrieve the raw value together with metadata for correct interpretation in userspace. Behaviour: - For 1000BASE-T, report per-channel (A–D) values and support a WORST channel selector. - For 100BASE-TX, only LINK-wide measurements are available. - Report average MSE only, with a max scale based on KSZ9477_MMD_SQI_MASK and a fixed refresh rate of 2 µs. This mapping differs from the OPEN Alliance SQI definition, which assigns thresholds such as pre-fail indices; the MSE interface instead provides the raw measurement, leaving interpretation to userspace. The LAN8842 is a low-power, single port triple-speed (10BASE-T/ 100BASE-TX/ 1000BASE-T) ethernet physical layer transceiver (PHY) that supports transmission and reception of data on standard CAT-5, as well as CAT-5e and CAT-6, Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cables. The LAN8842 supports industry-standard SGMII (Serial Gigabit Media Independent Interface) providing chip-to-chip connection to a Gigabit Ethernet MAC using a single serialized link (differential pair) in each direction. There are 2 variants of the lan8842. The one that supports timestamping (lan8842) and one that doesn't have timestamping (lan8832). Commit 21b688dabecb ("net: phy: micrel: Cable Diag feature for lan8814 phy") introduced cable_test support for the LAN8814 that reuses parts of the KSZ886x logic and introduced the cable_diag_reg and pair_mask parameters to account for differences between those chips. However, it did not update the ksz8081_type struct, so those members are now 0, causing no pairs to be tested in ksz886x_cable_test_get_status and ksz886x_cable_test_wait_for_completion to poll the wrong register for the affected PHYs (Basic Control/Reset, which is 0 in normal operation) and exit immediately. 2025-07-01phy: micrel: add Signal Quality Indicator (SQI) support for KSZ9477 switch PHYsOleksij Rempel
Add support for the Signal Quality Indicator (SQI) feature on KSZ9477 family switches, providing a relative measure of receive signal quality. The hardware exposes separate SQI readings per channel. For 1000BASE-T, all four channels are read. For 100BASE-TX, only one channel is reported, but which receive pair is active depends on Auto MDI-X negotiation, which is not exposed by the hardware. Therefore, it is not possible to reliably map the measured channel to a specific wire pair. This resolves an earlier discussion about how to handle multi-channel SQI. Originally, the plan was to expose all channels individually. However, since pair mapping is sometimes unavailable, this implementation treats SQI as a per-link metric instead. This fallback avoids ambiguity and ensures consistent behavior. The existing get_sqi() UAPI was designed for single-pair Ethernet (SPE), where per-pair and per-link are effectively equivalent. Restricting its use to per-link metrics does not introduce regressions for existing users. The raw 7-bit SQI value (0–127, lower is better) is converted to the standard 0–7 (high is better) scale. Empirical testing showed that the link becomes unstable around a raw value of 8. The SQI raw value remains zero if no data is received, even if noise is present. This confirms that the measurement reflects the "quality" during active data reception rather than the passive line state. User space must ensure that traffic is present on the link to obtain valid SQI readings. Enable cable test support for KSZ9477-class PHYs by reusing the existing KSZ9131 implementation. This also adds support for 100Mbit-only PHYs like KSZ8563, which are identified as KSZ9477. For these PHYs, only two wire pairs (A and B) are active, so the cable test logic limits the pair_mask accordingly. Support for KSZ8563 is untested but added based on its register compatibility and PHY ID match. Tested on KSZ9893 (Gigabit): open and short conditions were correctly detected on all four pairs. Fault length reporting is functional and varies by pair. For example: - 2m cable: open faults reported ~1.2m (pairs B–D), 0.0m (pair A) - No cable: all pairs report 0.0m fault length Signed-off-by: Oleksij Rempel <o.rempel@pengutronix.de> Reviewed-by: Andrew Lunn <andrew@lunn.ch> Link: https://patch.msgid.link/20250610091354.4060454-4-o.rempel@pengutronix.de Signed-off-by: Jakub Kicinski <kuba@kernel.org>
2025-06-11net: phy: micrel: Add RX error counter support for KSZ9477 switch-integrated ↵Oleksij Rempel
PHYs Add support for tracking receive error statistics from PHYs integrated into the KSZ9477 family of Ethernet switches. The integrated PHYs expose a receive error (RXER) counter in register 0x15. This counter increments when the PHY detects one or more symbol errors on a received frame. The register is cleared upon reading. Changes include: - `kszphy_update_stats()` to accumulate the RX error count. - `kszphy_get_phy_stats()` to expose this count via ethtool PHY stats. - Addition of a private `rx_err_pkt_cnt` field in the driver. - Registration of `.update_stats` and `.get_phy_stats` callbacks in the KSZ9477 PHY driver structure. The functionality of this counter was confirmed by physically disturbing the signal lines - specifically by wiggling exposed twisted pair wires and intentionally shorting between pairs. These actions triggered RXER increments, validating the counter's behavior. This RXER counter is confirmed for KSZ9477 and likely applicable to other related PHYs like those in KSZ9313. 2025-05-21net: phy: pass PHY driver to .match_phy_device OPChristian Marangi
Pass PHY driver pointer to .match_phy_device OP in addition to phydev. Having access to the PHY driver struct might be useful to check the PHY ID of the driver is being matched for in case the PHY ID scanned in the phydev is not consistent. A scenario for this is a PHY that change PHY ID after a firmware is loaded, in such case, the PHY ID stored in PHY device struct is not valid anymore and PHY will manually scan the ID in the match_phy_device function. Having the PHY driver info is also useful for those PHY driver that implement multiple simple .match_phy_device OP to match specific MMD PHY ID. With this extra info if the parsing logic is the same, the matching function can be generalized by using the phy_id in the PHY driver instead of hardcoding. Rust wrapper callback is updated to align to the new match_phy_device arguments. 2025-04-15net: ptp: introduce .supported_perout_flags to ptp_clock_infoJacob Keller
The PTP_PEROUT_REQUEST2 ioctl has gained support for flags specifying specific output behavior including PTP_PEROUT_ONE_SHOT, PTP_PEROUT_DUTY_CYCLE, PTP_PEROUT_PHASE. Driver authors are notorious for not checking the flags of the request. This results in misinterpreting the request, generating an output signal that does not match the requested value. It is anticipated that even more flags will be added in the future, resulting in even more broken requests. Expecting these issues to be caught during review or playing whack-a-mole after the fact is not a great solution. Instead, introduce the supported_perout_flags field in the ptp_clock_info structure. Update the core character device logic to explicitly reject any request which has a flag not on this list. This ensures that drivers must 'opt in' to the flags they support. Drivers which don't set the .supported_perout_flags field will not need to check that unsupported flags aren't passed, as the core takes care of this. Update the drivers which do support flags to set this new field. Note the following driver files set n_per_out to a non-zero value but did not check the flags at all: • drivers/ptp/ptp_clockmatrix.c • drivers/ptp/ptp_idt82p33.c • drivers/ptp/ptp_fc3.c • drivers/net/ethernet/ti/am65-cpts.c • drivers/net/ethernet/aquantia/atlantic/aq_ptp.c • drivers/net/ethernet/broadcom/bnxt/bnxt_ptp.c • drivers/net/dsa/sja1105/sja1105_ptp.c • drivers/net/ethernet/freescale/dpaa2/dpaa2-ptp.c • drivers/net/ethernet/mscc/ocelot_vsc7514.c • drivers/net/ethernet/intel/i40e/i40e_ptp.c Reviewed-by: Vadim Fedorenko <vadim.fedorenko@linux.dev> Signed-off-by: Jacob Keller <jacob.e.keller@intel.com> Reviewed-by: Kory Maincent <kory.maincent@bootlin.com> Link: https://patch.msgid.link/20250414-jk-supported-perout-flags-v2-2-f6b17d15475c@intel.com Signed-off-by: Jakub Kicinski <kuba@kernel.org>
2025-04-15net: ptp: introduce .supported_extts_flags to ptp_clock_infoJacob Keller
The PTP_EXTTS_REQUEST(2) ioctl has a flags field which specifies how the external timestamp request should behave. This includes which edge of the signal to timestamp, as well as a specialized "offset" mode. It is expected that more flags will be added in the future. Driver authors routinely do not check the flags, often accepting requests with flags which they do not support. Even drivers which do check flags may not be future-proofed to reject flags not yet defined. Thus, any future flag additions often require manually updating drivers to reject these flags. This approach of hoping we catch flag checks during review, or playing whack-a-mole after the fact is the wrong approach. Introduce the "supported_extts_flags" field to the ptp_clock_info structure. This field defines the set of flags the device actually supports. Update the core character device logic to check this field and reject unsupported requests. Getting this right is somewhat tricky. First, to avoid unnecessary repetition and make basic functionality work when .supported_extts_flags is 0, the core always accepts the PTP_ENABLE_FEATURE flag. This flag is used to set the 'on' parameter to the .enable function and is thus always 'supported' by all drivers. For backwards compatibility, the PTP_RISING_EDGE and PTP_FALLING_EDGE flags are merely "hints" when using the old PTP_EXTTS_REQUEST ioctl, and are not expected to be enforced. If the user issues PTP_EXTTS_REQUEST2, the PTP_STRICT_FLAGS flag is added which is supposed to inform the driver to strictly validate the flags and reject unsupported requests. To handle this, first check if the driver reports PTP_STRICT_FLAGS support. If it does not, then always allow the PTP_RISING_EDGE and PTP_FALLING_EDGE flags. This keeps backwards compatibility with the original PTP_EXTTS_REQUEST ioctl where these flags are not guaranteed to be honored. This way, drivers which do not set the supported_extts_flags will continue to accept requests for the original PTP_EXTTS_REQUEST ioctl. The core will automatically reject requests with new flags, and correctly reject requests with PTP_STRICT_FLAGS, where the driver is supposed to strictly validate the flags. Update the various drivers, refactoring their validation logic into the .supported_extts_flags field. For consistency and readability, PTP_ENABLE_FEATURE is not set in the supported flags list, and PTP_EXTTS_EDGES is expanded to PTP_RISING_EDGE | PTP_FALLING_EDGE in all cases. Note the following driver files set n_ext_ts to a non-zero value but did not check flags at all: • drivers/net/ethernet/freescale/dpaa2/dpaa2-ptp.c • drivers/net/ethernet/freescale/enetc/enetc_ptp.c • drivers/net/ethernet/intel/i40e/i40e_ptp.c • drivers/net/ethernet/marvell/octeontx2/nic/otx2_ptp.c • drivers/net/ethernet/renesas/ravb_ptp.c • drivers/net/ethernet/renesas/rtsn.c • drivers/net/ethernet/renesas/rtsn.h • drivers/net/ethernet/ti/am65-cpts.c • drivers/net/ethernet/ti/cpts.h • drivers/net/ethernet/ti/icssg/icss_iep.c • drivers/net/ethernet/xscale/ptp_ixp46x.c • drivers/net/phy/bcm-phy-ptp.c • drivers/ptp/ptp_ocp.c • drivers/ptp/ptp_pch.c • drivers/ptp/ptp_qoriq.c These drivers behavior does change slightly: they will now reject the PTP_EXTTS_REQUEST2 ioctl, because they do not strictly validate their flags. This also makes them no longer incorrectly accept PTP_EXT_OFFSET. Also note that the renesas ravb driver does not support PTP_STRICT_FLAGS. We could leave the .supported_extts_flags as 0, but I added the PTP_RISING_EDGE | PTP_FALLING_EDGE since the driver previously manually validated these flags. This is equivalent to 0 because the core will allow these flags regardless unless PTP_STRICT_FLAGS is also set.
