2026-07-20ecryptfs: reject too-small tag 70 packetsYichong Chen
ecryptfs_parse_tag_70_packet() subtracts fixed metadata fields from the parsed packet body size to derive the encrypted filename size. A malformed packet with a body smaller than those fixed fields can underflow that size calculation. Reject tag 70 packets before the subtraction unless the body contains the signature, cipher code, and at least one byte of encrypted filename data. 2026-07-20ecryptfs: fix tag 11 packet exact-fit size checkYichong Chen
parse_tag_11_packet() rejects a packet when the already-consumed tag and length bytes plus the packet body exceed the caller supplied maximum packet size. The check currently adds one extra byte, even though *packet_size already includes the tag byte before the length is parsed. Remove the extra byte so a tag 11 packet that exactly fits the available buffer is accepted while oversized packets are still rejected. 2026-07-20ecryptfs: pass packet set buffer size to parserYichong Chen
ecryptfs_parse_packet_set() receives a pointer into the file header, but it calculates the remaining packet buffer size from PAGE_SIZE - 8. For version 1 headers the packet set starts later in the header, so this can overstate the available buffer. Pass the actual packet set buffer length from the caller and calculate per-packet limits from the remaining bytes in that buffer. Recompute the remaining length after consuming a tag 3 packet before parsing the following tag 11 packet. 2026-07-17ecryptfs: reject oversized encrypted_key_size in parse_tag_3_packetHanQuan
parse_tag_3_packet() set encrypted_key_size from the Tag 3 packet body without bounding it against ECRYPTFS_MAX_KEY_BYTES (64). When encrypted_key_size > 64, decrypt_passphrase_encrypted_session_key() sets decrypted_key_size = encrypted_key_size and performs two out-of-bounds writes: 1. crypto_skcipher_decrypt() writes encrypted_key_size bytes into decrypted_key[64] via scatterlist, overflowing into the parent ecryptfs_auth_tok struct. 2. memcpy(crypt_stat->key, decrypted_key, decrypted_key_size) writes into crypt_stat->key[64], corrupting root_iv, keysig_list, and mutexes in ecryptfs_crypt_stat. Only AES-192 (cipher code 0x08) enables this because it sets crypt_stat->key_size = 24 independently of encrypted_key_size, allowing crypto_skcipher_setkey() to succeed while encrypted_key_size exceeds ECRYPTFS_MAX_KEY_BYTES. The PKI decryption path (parse_tag_65_packet) already validates decrypted_key_size <= ECRYPTFS_MAX_KEY_BYTES; the passphrase path omits this check. Bound encrypted_key_size against ECRYPTFS_MAX_KEY_BYTES (64) rather than ECRYPTFS_MAX_ENCRYPTED_KEY_BYTES (512). The 64-byte limit also protects the 512-byte encrypted_key[] buffer, so the former 512-byte check is removed as redundant. 2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) 2025-10-31ecryptfs: Use MD5 library instead of crypto_shashEric Biggers
eCryptfs uses MD5 for a couple unusual purposes: to "mix" the key into the IVs for file contents encryption (similar to ESSIV), and to prepend some key-dependent bytes to the plaintext when encrypting filenames (which is useless since eCryptfs encrypts the filenames with ECB). Currently, eCryptfs computes these MD5 hashes using the crypto_shash API. Update it to instead use the MD5 library API. This is simpler and faster: the library doesn't require memory allocations, can't fail, and provides direct access to MD5 without overhead such as indirect calls. To preserve the existing behavior of eCryptfs support being disabled when the kernel is booted with "fips=1", make ecryptfs_get_tree() check fips_enabled itself. Previously it relied on crypto_alloc_shash("md5") failing. I don't know for sure that this is actually needed; e.g., it could be argued that eCryptfs's use of MD5 isn't for a security purpose as far as FIPS is concerned. But this preserves the existing behavior. Tested by verifying that an existing eCryptfs can still be mounted with a kernel that has this commit, with all the files matching. Also tested creating a filesystem with this commit and mounting+reading it without. The 'TAG 66 Packet Format' description is missing the cipher code and checksum fields that are packed into the message packet. As a result, the buffer allocated for the packet is 3 bytes too small and write_tag_66_packet() will write up to 3 bytes past the end of the buffer. Fix this by increasing the size of the allocation so the whole packet will always fit in the buffer. 2020-08-07mm, treewide: rename kzfree() to kfree_sensitive()Waiman Long
As said by Linus: A symmetric naming is only helpful if it implies symmetries in use. Otherwise it's actively misleading. In "kzalloc()", the z is meaningful and an important part of what the caller wants. In "kzfree()", the z is actively detrimental, because maybe in the future we really _might_ want to use that "memfill(0xdeadbeef)" or something. The "zero" part of the interface isn't even _relevant_. The main reason that kzfree() exists is to clear sensitive information that should not be leaked to other future users of the same memory objects. Rename kzfree() to kfree_sensitive() to follow the example of the recently added kvfree_sensitive() and make the intention of the API more explicit. In addition, memzero_explicit() is used to clear the memory to make sure that it won't get optimized away by the compiler. The renaming is done by using the command sequence: git grep -w --name-only kzfree |\ xargs sed -i 's/kzfree/kfree_sensitive/' followed by some editing of the kfree_sensitive() kerneldoc and adding a kzfree backward compatibility macro in slab.h. Due to the removal of the blkcipher and ablkcipher algorithm types, crypto_skcipher::keysize is now redundant since it always equals crypto_skcipher_alg(tfm)->max_keysize. Remove it and update crypto_skcipher_default_keysize() accordingly. Also rename crypto_skcipher_default_keysize() to crypto_skcipher_max_keysize() to clarify that it specifically returns the maximum key size, not some unspecified "default". It turns out that it breaks booting with an encrypted volume, and Eric biggers reports that it also breaks the fscrypt tests [1] and loading of in-kernel X.509 certificates [2]. The root cause of all the breakage is likely the same, but David Howells is off email so rather than try to work it out it's getting reverted in order to not impact the rest of the merge window. Replace the uid/gid/perm permissions checking on a key with an ACL to allow the SETATTR and SEARCH permissions to be split. This will also allow a greater range of subjects to represented. ============ WHY DO THIS? ============ The problem is that SETATTR and SEARCH cover a slew of actions, not all of which should be grouped together. For SETATTR, this includes actions that are about controlling access to a key: (1) Changing a key's ownership. (2) Changing a key's security information. (3) Setting a keyring's restriction. And actions that are about managing a key's lifetime: (4) Setting an expiry time. (5) Revoking a key. and (proposed) managing a key as part of a cache: (6) Invalidating a key. Managing a key's lifetime doesn't really have anything to do with controlling access to that key. Expiry time is awkward since it's more about the lifetime of the content and so, in some ways goes better with WRITE permission. It can, however, be set unconditionally by a process with an appropriate authorisation token for instantiating a key, and can also be set by the key type driver when a key is instantiated, so lumping it with the access-controlling actions is probably okay. As for SEARCH permission, that currently covers: (1) Finding keys in a keyring tree during a search. (2) Permitting keyrings to be joined. (3) Invalidation. But these don't really belong together either, since these actions really need to be controlled separately. Finally, there are number of special cases to do with granting the administrator special rights to invalidate or clear keys that I would like to handle with the ACL rather than key flags and special checks. =============== WHAT IS CHANGED =============== The SETATTR permission is split to create two new permissions: (1) SET_SECURITY - which allows the key's owner, group and ACL to be changed and a restriction to be placed on a keyring. (2) REVOKE - which allows a key to be revoked. The SEARCH permission is split to create: (1) SEARCH - which allows a keyring to be search and a key to be found. (2) JOIN - which allows a keyring to be joined as a session keyring. (3) INVAL - which allows a key to be invalidated. The WRITE permission is also split to create: (1) WRITE - which allows a key's content to be altered and links to be added, removed and replaced in a keyring. (2) CLEAR - which allows a keyring to be cleared completely. This is split out to make it possible to give just this to an administrator. (3) REVOKE - see above. Keys acquire ACLs which consist of a series of ACEs, and all that apply are unioned together. An ACE specifies a subject, such as: (*) Possessor - permitted to anyone who 'possesses' a key (*) Owner - permitted to the key owner (*) Group - permitted to the key group (*) Everyone - permitted to everyone Note that 'Other' has been replaced with 'Everyone' on the assumption that you wouldn't grant a permit to 'Other' that you wouldn't also grant to everyone else. Further subjects may be made available by later patches. The ACE also specifies a permissions mask. The set of permissions is now: VIEW Can view the key metadata READ Can read the key content WRITE Can update/modify the key content SEARCH Can find the key by searching/requesting LINK Can make a link to the key SET_SECURITY Can change owner, ACL, expiry INVAL Can invalidate REVOKE Can revoke JOIN Can join this keyring CLEAR Can clear this keyring The KEYCTL_SETPERM function is then deprecated. The KEYCTL_SET_TIMEOUT function then is permitted if SET_SECURITY is set, or if the caller has a valid instantiation auth token. The KEYCTL_INVALIDATE function then requires INVAL. The KEYCTL_REVOKE function then requires REVOKE. The KEYCTL_JOIN_SESSION_KEYRING function then requires JOIN to join an existing keyring. The JOIN permission is enabled by default for session keyrings and manually created keyrings only. ====================== BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY ====================== To maintain backward compatibility, KEYCTL_SETPERM will translate the permissions mask it is given into a new ACL for a key - unless KEYCTL_SET_ACL has been called on that key, in which case an error will be returned. It will convert possessor, owner, group and other permissions into separate ACEs, if each portion of the mask is non-zero. SETATTR permission turns on all of INVAL, REVOKE and SET_SECURITY. WRITE permission turns on WRITE, REVOKE and, if a keyring, CLEAR. JOIN is turned on if a keyring is being altered. The KEYCTL_DESCRIBE function translates the ACL back into a permissions mask to return depending on possessor, owner, group and everyone ACEs. It will make the following mappings: (1) INVAL, JOIN -> SEARCH (2) SET_SECURITY -> SETATTR (3) REVOKE -> WRITE if SETATTR isn't already set (4) CLEAR -> WRITE Note that the value subsequently returned by KEYCTL_DESCRIBE may not match the value set with KEYCTL_SETATTR. ======= TESTING ======= This passes the keyutils testsuite for all but a couple of tests: (1) tests/keyctl/dh_compute/badargs: The first wrong-key-type test now returns EOPNOTSUPP rather than ENOKEY as READ permission isn't removed if the type doesn't have ->read(). You still can't actually read the key. (2) tests/keyctl/permitting/valid: The view-other-permissions test doesn't work as Other has been replaced with Everyone in the ACL. 2019-04-25crypto: shash - remove shash_desc::flagsEric Biggers
The flags field in 'struct shash_desc' never actually does anything. The only ostensibly supported flag is CRYPTO_TFM_REQ_MAY_SLEEP. However, no shash algorithm ever sleeps, making this flag a no-op. With this being the case, inevitably some users who can't sleep wrongly pass MAY_SLEEP. These would all need to be fixed if any shash algorithm actually started sleeping. For example, the shash_ahash_*() functions, which wrap a shash algorithm with the ahash API, pass through MAY_SLEEP from the ahash API to the shash API. However, the shash functions are called under kmap_atomic(), so actually they're assumed to never sleep. Even if it turns out that some users do need preemption points while hashing large buffers, we could easily provide a helper function crypto_shash_update_large() which divides the data into smaller chunks and calls crypto_shash_update() and cond_resched() for each chunk. It's not necessary to have a flag in 'struct shash_desc', nor is it necessary to make individual shash algorithms aware of this at all. Therefore, remove shash_desc::flags, and document that the crypto_shash_*() functions can be called from any context. 2017-10-12ecryptfs: fix dereference of NULL user_key_payloadEric Biggers
In eCryptfs, we failed to verify that the authentication token keys are not revoked before dereferencing their payloads, which is problematic because the payload of a revoked key is NULL. request_key() *does* skip revoked keys, but there is still a window where the key can be revoked before we acquire the key semaphore. Fix it by updating ecryptfs_get_key_payload_data() to return -EKEYREVOKED if the key payload is NULL. For completeness we check this for "encrypted" keys as well as "user" keys, although encrypted keys cannot be revoked currently. Alternatively we could use key_validate(), but since we'll also need to fix ecryptfs_get_key_payload_data() to validate the payload length, it seems appropriate to just check the payload pointer. PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} macros were introduced *long* time ago with promise that one day it will be possible to implement page cache with bigger chunks than PAGE_SIZE. This promise never materialized. And unlikely will. We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case, especially on the border between fs and mm. Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much breakage to be doable. Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are not. The patch 237fead61998: "[PATCH] ecryptfs: fs/Makefile and fs/Kconfig" from Oct 4, 2006, leads to the following static checker warning: fs/ecryptfs/crypto.c:846 ecryptfs_new_file_context() error: off-by-one overflow 'crypt_stat->cipher' size 32. rl = '0-32' There is a mismatch between the size of ecryptfs_crypt_stat.cipher and ecryptfs_mount_crypt_stat.global_default_cipher_name causing the copy of the cipher name to cause a off-by-one string copy error. This fix ensures the space reserved for this string is the same size including the trailing zero at the end throughout ecryptfs. This fix avoids increasing the size of ecryptfs_crypt_stat.cipher and also ecryptfs_parse_tag_70_packet_silly_stack.cipher_string and instead reduces the of ECRYPTFS_MAX_CIPHER_NAME_SIZE to 31 and includes the + 1 for the end of string terminator. NOTE: An overflow is not possible in practice since the value copied into global_default_cipher_name is validated by ecryptfs_code_for_cipher_string() at mount time. None of the allowed cipher strings are long enough to cause the potential buffer overflow fixed by this patch. statfs() calls on eCryptfs files returned the wrong filesystem type and, when using filename encryption, the wrong maximum filename length. If mount-wide filename encryption is enabled, the cipher block size and the lower filesystem's max filename length will determine the max eCryptfs filename length. Pre-tested, known good lengths are used when the lower filesystem's namelen is 255 and a cipher with 8 or 16 byte block sizes is used. Fixes a regression caused by b5695d04634fa4ccca7dcbc05bb4a66522f02e0b Kernel keyring keys containing eCryptfs authentication tokens should not be write locked when calling out to ecryptfsd to wrap and unwrap file encryption keys. The eCryptfs kernel code can not hold the key's write lock because ecryptfsd needs to request the key after receiving such a request from the kernel. Without this fix, all file opens and creates will timeout and fail when using the eCryptfs PKI infrastructure. This is not an issue when using passphrase-based mount keys, which is the most widely deployed eCryptfs configuration.
