Pull fscrypt updates from Eric Biggers:
"The main change this cycle is a significant simplification that's been
overdue for a while now: standardizing on a single file contents
encryption implementation in ext4 and f2fs, instead of having two.
Specifically, the original filesystem-layer file contents encryption
implementation is removed, and the blk-crypto implementation is now
used unconditionally. blk-crypto delegates either to inline crypto
hardware or to the CPU via blk-crypto-fallback. The latter is
functionally equivalent to the original filesystem-layer code.
The blk-crypto implementation already existed, but previously it was
used only when the filesystem was mounted with "-o inlinecrypt". Now,
"-o inlinecrypt" just selects whether inline crypto hardware is used.
To allow maintaining that user control over hardware use, the
blk-crypto API is extended with a new flag BLK_CRYPTO_CFG_ALLOW_HW.
Overall, this removes quite a bit of redundant code from ext4, f2fs,
and fs/crypto/. It should make things easier for ongoing filesystem
efforts such as iomap support, large folios, and btrfs encryption
(btrfs had already been planning to use blk-crypto exclusively.)
There are two small behavior changes of note:
- Direct I/O now works on encrypted files even without "-o inlinecrypt",
rather than falling back to buffered I/O. This is effectively a
bugfix, though I'll continue to keep an eye out for any user that
may have been depending on the buffered I/O fallback.
- IV_INO_LBLK_32 policies are no longer supported in certain cases
that didn't make sense and have no known uses.
This has been in linux-next since July 22 with no reported issues. All
encryption xfstests pass on ext4 and f2fs. As usual I've also been
using it on a system with an fscrypt-encrypted home directory. Of
course, the blk-crypto code paths also aren't new and were already
being used on many systems via the inlinecrypt mount option.
In addition to the main change described above, there are a few other
cleanups such as using lock guards for mutexes, improving
documentation, and removing a workaround for outdated gcc versions"

Pull vfs writeback updates from Christian Brauner:
"This makes sync_inode_metadata() and writeback_single_inode() persist
not only the inode but all metadata associated with it.
A new .sync_inode_metadata superblock operation is called from
__writeback_single_inode(). Alongside it a new I_METADATA_WRITEBACK
state flag is added.
Filesystems no longer need their own mmb_fsync() implementations and
can just use simple_fsync(). All metadata is now written for IS_SYNC
and IS_DIRSYNC inodes. Races where several fsyncs raced and mmb_sync()
could return before all buffers were really persisted are fixed since
I_SYNC now serializes properly.
The I_METADATA_WRITEBACK scheme also fixes the case where a
WB_SYNC_NONE writeback landing between write(2) and fsync(2) left
fsync(2) failing to persist the inode. That problem is not specific to
filesystems using the generic metadata bh tracking, and the ones that
do not are left alone.
ext2, udf, bfs, minix, fat and ext4 in nojournal mode have their data
integrity writeout fixed and are converted. affs drops metadata bh
tracking and mmb_fsync() is removed.
A few other fixes came out of this:
- a UAF in mark_buffer_write_io_error()
- missed inode writeback when racing with __writeback_single_inode()
- ext4 allocating the mapping_metadata_bhs struct on demand
- three fat fixes: a lost inode update in do_msdos_rename() with
DIRSYNC, inode buffer write errors not propagating out of
fat_sync_inode_metadata() and directory entries not being
persisted on fsync(2) of the root directory"

In __ext4_fill_super(), s_resgid is initialized by calling
ext4_get_resuid() instead of ext4_get_resgid(), resulting in the
reserved GID being set to the same value as the reserved UID rather
than the value stored in the superblock.

Several racing fsyncs on ext4 in nojournal mode could result in some
fsync returning earlier than all metadata buffers were properly
persisted. Also ext4_fsync() in nojournal mode was somewhat inefficient
because it was always writing out the inode regardless whether it was
dirty or not.
Fix these issues by using new .sync_inode_metadata method which makes
sure all inode related metadata is written to disk during any
WB_SYNC_ALL writeback in nojournal mode. This also somewhat simplifies
the nojournal mode fsync handling.

Currently every ext4 inode gets mapping_metadata_bhs struct although it
is only needed when running without a journal and only for inodes where
any metadata was dirtied. Allocate mapping_metadata_bhs struct on demand

Calling iput() on EA inodes while holding xattr_sem or a jbd2 handle
can trigger write_inode_now() -> ext4_writepages() -> s_writepages_rwsem,
creating a lock ordering issue during mount (!SB_ACTIVE).
Add ext4_put_ea_inode() which uses iput_if_not_last() as a fast path.
If this is not the last reference, it is dropped immediately. If this
is the last reference, the inode is linked onto a per-sb lock-free llist
via i_ea_iput_node (embedded in ext4_inode_info, sharing space with the
unused xattr_sem of EA inodes via a union) and a delayed worker
(1 jiffie) performs the final iput() in a clean context. This avoids
per-iput memory allocation.
Flush points ensure all pending EA inode evictions complete before
dependent resources become unavailable:
- ext4_put_super / failed_mount9: before quota shutdown
- failed_mount_wq: before freeing xattr caches
- failed_mount3a: before freeing shrinker (journal replay case)
- ext4_sync_fs: before remount-ro, freeze, or sync completes
Initialization is placed before journal loading since fast commit
replay may trigger evictions that call ext4_put_ea_inode().
Also moves init_rwsem(xattr_sem) from init_once to ext4_alloc_inode to
handle slab object reuse after the union field has been overwritten.

If s_inodes_per_group is not a multiple of s_inodes_per_block, the
division that computes s_itb_per_group truncates, reserving fewer blocks
for the inode table than needed.
On a crafted filesystem image, this allows __ext4_get_inode_loc() to
compute a block offset beyond the inode table, reading unrelated data as
an inode structure.
Add the missing divisibility check alongside the existing validation in
ext4_block_group_meta_init().

The block and inode bitmap checksums are computed over a whole number of
bytes: ext4_inode_bitmap_csum_*() use EXT4_INODES_PER_GROUP(sb) >> 3 and
ext4_block_bitmap_csum_*() use EXT4_CLUSTERS_PER_GROUP(sb) / 8 as the
length passed to ext4_chksum().
If s_inodes_per_group or s_clusters_per_group is not a multiple of 8, the
trailing fractional bits are excluded from the checksum. Those bits are
then unprotected, and any incremental csum update path that assumes a
byte-aligned bitmap can compute a checksum inconsistent with the full
recalculation, corrupting the on-disk bitmap checksum.
Reject such filesystems at mount time by adding the missing " & 7"
alignment checks alongside the existing range validation.

Snapshot-based fast commit can fall back when the commit-time snapshot
cannot be built (e.g. extent status cache misses). It is useful to
quantify the updates-locked window and to see why snapshotting failed.
Add best-effort snapshot counters to the ext4 superblock and extend
/proc/fs/ext4/<sb_id>/fc_info to report the number of snapshotted
inodes and ranges, snapshot failure reasons, and the average/max time

Fast commit can hold s_fc_lock while writing journal blocks. Mapping the
journal inode can take its i_data_sem. Normal inode update paths can take a
data inode i_data_sem and then s_fc_lock, which makes lockdep report a
circular dependency.
lockdep treats all i_data_sem instances as one lock class and cannot
distinguish the journal inode i_data_sem from a regular inode i_data_sem.
The journal inode is not tracked by fast commit and no FC waiters ever
depend on it, so this is not a real ABBA deadlock. Assign the journal inode
a dedicated i_data_sem lockdep subclass to avoid the false positive.
Inode cache objects can be recycled, so also reset i_data_sem to
I_DATA_SEM_NORMAL when allocating an ext4 inode. Otherwise a new inode may
inherit an old subclass (journal/quota/ea) and trigger lockdep warnings.

"For historical reasons, the inode->i_ino field is an unsigned long,
which means that it's 32 bits on 32 bit architectures. This has caused
a number of filesystems to implement hacks to hash a 64-bit identifier
into a 32-bit field, and deprives us of a universal identifier field
for an inode.
This changes the inode->i_ino field from an unsigned long to a u64.
This shouldn't make any material difference on 64-bit hosts, but
32-bit hosts will see struct inode grow by at least 4 bytes. This
could have effects on slabcache sizes and field alignment.
The bulk of the changes are to format strings and tracepoints, since
the kernel itself doesn't care that much about the i_ino field. The
first patch changes some vfs function arguments, so check that one out
carefully.
With this change, we may be able to shrink some inode structures. For
instance, struct nfs_inode has a fileid field that holds the 64-bit
inode number. With this set of changes, that field could be
eliminated. I'd rather leave that sort of cleanups for later just to
keep this simple"

Fix the problem by removing inode from the hash already in

Commit b98535d09179 ("ext4: fix bug_on in start_this_handle during umount
filesystem") moved ext4_unregister_sysfs() before flushing s_sb_upd_work
to prevent new error work from being queued via /proc/fs/ext4/xx/mb_groups
reads during unmount. However, this introduced a use-after-free because
update_super_work calls ext4_notify_error_sysfs() -> sysfs_notify() which
accesses the kobject's kernfs_node after it has been freed by kobject_del()
in ext4_unregister_sysfs():
update_super_work ext4_put_super
----------------- --------------
ext4_unregister_sysfs(sb)
kobject_del(&sbi->s_kobj)
__kobject_del()
sysfs_remove_dir()
kobj->sd = NULL
sysfs_put(sd)
kernfs_put() // RCU free
ext4_notify_error_sysfs(sbi)
sysfs_notify(&sbi->s_kobj)
kn = kobj->sd // stale pointer
kernfs_get(kn) // UAF on freed kernfs_node
ext4_journal_destroy()
flush_work(&sbi->s_sb_upd_work)
Instead of reordering the teardown sequence, fix this by making
ext4_notify_error_sysfs() detect that sysfs has already been torn down
by checking s_kobj.state_in_sysfs, and skipping the sysfs_notify() call
in that case. A dedicated mutex (s_error_notify_mutex) serializes
ext4_notify_error_sysfs() against kobject_del() in ext4_unregister_sysfs()
to prevent TOCTOU races where the kobject could be deleted between the
state_in_sysfs check and the sysfs_notify() call.

Track metadata bhs for an inode in fs-private part of the inode. We need
the tracking only for nojournal mode so this is somewhat wasteful. We
can relatively easily make the mapping_metadata_bhs struct dynamically
allocated similarly to how we treat jbd2_inode but let's leave that for
ext4 specific series once the dust settles a bit.

On 32-bit architectures, unsigned long is only 32 bits wide, which
causes 64-bit inode numbers to be silently truncated. Several
filesystems (NFS, XFS, BTRFS, etc.) can generate inode numbers that
exceed 32 bits, and this truncation can lead to inode number collisions
and other subtle bugs on 32-bit systems.
Change the type of inode->i_ino from unsigned long to u64 to ensure that
inode numbers are always represented as 64-bit values regardless of
architecture. Update all format specifiers treewide from %lu/%lx to
%llu/%llx to match the new type, along with corresponding local variable
types.
This is the bulk treewide conversion. Earlier patches in this series
handled trace events separately to allow trace field reordering for
better struct packing on 32-bit.

This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using
git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'
to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.
Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.
For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate
conversion.

This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:
Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)
Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)
Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)
(where TYPE may also be *VAR)
The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

Pull misc vfs updates from Christian Brauner:
"This contains a mix of VFS cleanups, performance improvements, API
fixes, documentation, and a deprecation notice.
Scalability and performance:
- Rework pid allocation to only take pidmap_lock once instead of
twice during alloc_pid(), improving thread creation/teardown
throughput by 10-16% depending on false-sharing luck. Pad the
namespace refcount to reduce false-sharing
- Track file lock presence via a flag in ->i_opflags instead of
reading ->i_flctx, avoiding false-sharing with ->i_readcount on
open/close hot paths. Measured 4-16% improvement on 24-core
open-in-a-loop benchmarks
- Use a consume fence in locks_inode_context() to match the
store-release/load-consume idiom, eliminating a hardware fence on
some architectures
- Annotate cdev_lock with __cacheline_aligned_in_smp to prevent
false-sharing
- Remove a redundant DCACHE_MANAGED_DENTRY check in
__follow_mount_rcu() that never fires since the caller already
verifies it, eliminating a 100% mispredicted branch
- Fix a 100% mispredicted likely() in devcgroup_inode_permission()
that became wrong after a prior code reorder
Bug fixes and correctness:
- Make insert_inode_locked() wait for inode destruction instead of
skipping, fixing a corner case where two matching inodes could
exist in the hash
- Move f_mode initialization before file_ref_init() in alloc_file()
to respect the SLAB_TYPESAFE_BY_RCU ordering contract
- Add a WARN_ON_ONCE guard in try_to_free_buffers() for folios with
no buffers attached, preventing a null pointer dereference when
AS_RELEASE_ALWAYS is set but no release_folio op exists
- Fix select restart_block to store end_time as timespec64, avoiding
truncation of tv_sec on 32-bit architectures
- Make dump_inode() use get_kernel_nofault() to safely access inode
and superblock fields, matching the dump_mapping() pattern
API modernization:
- Make posix_acl_to_xattr() allocate the buffer internally since
every single caller was doing it anyway. Reduces boilerplate and
unnecessary error checking across ~15 filesystems
- Replace deprecated simple_strtoul() with kstrtoul() for the
ihash_entries, dhash_entries, mhash_entries, and mphash_entries
boot parameters, adding proper error handling
- Convert chardev code to use guard(mutex) and __free(kfree) cleanup
patterns
- Replace min_t() with min() or umin() in VFS code to avoid silently
truncating unsigned long to unsigned int
- Gate LOOKUP_RCU assertions behind CONFIG_DEBUG_VFS since callers
already check the flag
Deprecation:
- Begin deprecating legacy BSD process accounting (acct(2)). The
interface has numerous footguns and better alternatives exist
(eBPF)
Documentation:
- Fix and complete kernel-doc for struct export_operations, removing
duplicated documentation between ReST and source
- Fix kernel-doc warnings for __start_dirop() and ilookup5_nowait()

- Add a kunit test for initramfs cpio handling of entries with

Use the kernel's resizable hash table (rhashtable) to find the
fsverity_info. This way file systems that want to support fsverity don't
have to bloat every inode in the system with an extra pointer. The
trade-off is that looking up the fsverity_info is a bit more expensive
now, but the main operations are still dominated by I/O and hashing
overhead.
The rhashtable implementations requires no external synchronization, and
the _fast versions of the APIs provide the RCU critical sections required
by the implementation. Because struct fsverity_info is only removed on
inode eviction and does not contain a reference count, there is no need
for an extended critical section to grab a reference or validate the
object state. The file open path uses rhashtable_lookup_get_insert_fast,
which can either find an existing object for the hash key or insert a
new one in a single atomic operation, so that concurrent opens never
instantiate duplicate fsverity_info structure. FS_IOC_ENABLE_VERITY must
already be synchronized by a combination of i_rwsem and file system flags
and uses rhashtable_lookup_insert_fast, which errors out on an existing
object for the hash key as an additional safety check.
Because insertion into the hash table now happens before S_VERITY is set,
fsverity just becomes a barrier and a flag check and doesn't have to look
up the fsverity_info at all, so there is only a single lookup per
->read_folio or ->readahead invocation. For btrfs there is an additional
one for each bio completion, while for ext4 and f2fs the fsverity_info
is stored in the per-I/O context and reused for the completion workqueue.

Convert ext4_inode_cache to use the kmem_cache_args interface and
specify a free pointer offset.
Since ext4_inode_cache uses a constructor, the free pointer would be
placed after the object to prevent overwriting fields used by the
constructor.
However, some fields such as ->i_flags are not used by the constructor
and can safely be repurposed for the free pointer.
Specify the free pointer offset at i_flags to reduce the object size.

Use the new fserror functions to report metadata errors to fsnotify.
Note that ext4 inconsistently passes around negative and positive error
numbers all over the codebase, so we force them all to negative for
consistency in what we report to fserror, and fserror ensures that only
positive error numbers are passed to fanotify, per the fanotify(7)

min_t(unsigned int, a, b) casts an 'unsigned long' to 'unsigned int'.
Use min(a, b) instead as it promotes any 'unsigned int' to 'unsigned long'
and so cannot discard significant bits.
A couple of places need umin() because of loops like:
nfolios = DIV_ROUND_UP(ret + start, PAGE_SIZE);
for (i = 0; i < nfolios; i++) {
struct folio *folio = page_folio(pages[i]);
...
unsigned int len = umin(ret, PAGE_SIZE - start);
...
ret -= len;
...
}
where the compiler doesn't track things well enough to know that
'ret' is never negative.
The alternate loop:
for (i = 0; ret > 0; i++) {
struct folio *folio = page_folio(pages[i]);
...
unsigned int len = min(ret, PAGE_SIZE - start);
...
ret -= len;
...
}
would be equivalent and doesn't need 'nfolios'.
Most of the 'unsigned long' actually come from PAGE_SIZE.
Detected by an extra check added to min_t().

Since block device (See commit 3c20917120ce ("block/bdev: enable large
folio support for large logical block sizes")) and page cache (See commit
ab95d23bab220ef8 ("filemap: allocate mapping_min_order folios in the page
cache")) has the ability to have a minimum order when allocating folio,
and ext4 has supported large folio in commit 7ac67301e82f ("ext4: enable
large folio for regular file"), now add support for block_size > PAGE_SIZE
in ext4.
set_blocksize() -> bdev_validate_blocksize() already validates the block
size, so ext4_load_super() does not need to perform additional checks.
Here we only need to add the FS_LBS bit to fs_flags.
In addition, block sizes larger than the page size are currently supported
only when CONFIG_TRANSPARENT_HUGEPAGE is enabled. To make this explicit,
a blocksize_gt_pagesize entry has been added under /sys/fs/ext4/feature/,
indicating whether bs > ps is supported. This allows mke2fs to check the
interface and determine whether a warning should be issued when formatting
a filesystem with block size larger than the page size.

Supporting a block size greater than the page size (BS > PS) requires
support for large folios. However, several features (e.g., encrypt)
do not yet support large folios.
To prevent conflicts, this patch adds checks at mount time to prohibit
these features from being used when BS > PS. Since these features cannot
be changed on remount, there is no need to check on remount.
This patch adds s_max_folio_order, initialized during mount according to
filesystem features and mount options. If s_max_folio_order is 0, large
folios are disabled.
With this in place, ext4_set_inode_mapping_order() can be simplified by
checking s_max_folio_order, avoiding redundant checks.

ext4_calculate_overhead() used a single page for its bitmap buffer, which
worked fine when PAGE_SIZE >= block size. However, with block size greater
than page size (BS > PS) support, the bitmap can exceed a single page.
To address this, we now use kvmalloc() to allocate memory of the filesystem
block size, to properly support BS > PS.

When jbd2_journal_abort() is called, the provided error code is stored
in the journal superblock. Some existing calls hard-code -EIO even when
the actual failure is not I/O related.
This patch updates those calls to pass more accurate error codes,
allowing the superblock to record the true cause of failure. This helps

In the iomap_write_iter(), the iomap buffered write frame does not hold
any locks between querying the inode extent mapping info and performing
page cache writes. As a result, the extent mapping can be changed due to
concurrent I/O in flight. Similarly, in the iomap_writepage_map(), the
write-back process faces a similar problem: concurrent changes can
invalidate the extent mapping before the I/O is submitted.
Therefore, both of these processes must recheck the mapping info after
acquiring the folio lock. To address this, similar to XFS, we propose
introducing an extent sequence number to serve as a validity cookie for
the extent. After commit 24b7a2331fcd ("ext4: clairfy the rules for
modifying extents"), we can ensure the extent information should always
be processed through the extent status tree, and the extent status tree
is always uptodate under i_rwsem or invalidate_lock or folio lock, so
it's safe to introduce this sequence number. The sequence number will be
increased whenever the extent status tree changes, preparing for the
buffered write iomap conversion.
Besides, this mechanism is also applicable for the moving extents case.
In move_extent_per_page(), it also needs to reacquire data_sem and check
the mapping info again under the folio lock.
