We have snd_soc_register_component() (A), but we can't setup component specific setting, like name, etc from driver, because component itself is allocated in that function (x). (A) int snd_soc_register_component(...) { ... (x) component = devm_kzalloc(...); if (!component) return -ENOMEM; (B) ret = snd_soc_component_initialize(...); if (ret < 0) return ret; (C) return snd_soc_add_component(...); } So each driver needs to use snd_soc_component_{initialize/add}() (= B/C) instead of using snd_soc_register_component() (A), but it looks unbalanced with its paired unregiser function. Let's merge (B) and (C) into new register function, and allows component as parameter. Card has pop_time which have used only from TI, and it is now stop using it. This pop_time is used for debug, and can be access from debugfs. Let's move it from Card to soc-dapm.c local. This patch renames it as asoc/${card}/pop_time to asoc/dapm_pop_time. This patch moves it from Card to soc-dapm.c, tidyup soc-dapm.c accordingly, and remove card->pop_time from cx20442.c which is no longer needed. 2026-05-11ASoC: core: Move all users to deferrable card bindingCezary Rojewski
Commit a3375522bb5e2 ("ASoC: core: Complete support for card rebinding") completed the feature and at the same time divided ASoC users into two groups: 1) cards that fail to enumerate the moment one of the components is not available 2) cards that succeed to enumerate even if some of their components become available late Given the component-based nature of ASoC, approach 2) is preferred and can be used by all ASoC users. By dropping 1) the card binding code can also be simplified. Flatten code that is currently conditional based on ->devres_dev and convert snd_soc_rebind_card() to call_soc_bind_card(). The latter is a selector between managed and unmanaged card-binding behaviour to keep non-devm users happy. With rebinding being the default, devm_snd_soc_register_card() takes form of its deferrable friend - all the devm job is already done by devm_snd_soc_bind_card(). Merge series from Charles Keepax <ckeepax@opensource.cirrus.com>: Another fairly mixed bag of small SDCA fixes/improvements. Fix one DisCo property that was treated as mandatory but is actually not present in the first version of the specification. Fix the counting of routes for SU/GE DAPM widgets, this currently makes assumptions that are not guaranteed to be true which can result in too many/few DAPM routes. Then finally a couple improvements to the volume controls, simplify the mapping between ALSA and SDCA volumes and pull the volume stuff back into the SDCA code. It just wasn't sitting right with me that it was being handled in the ASoC core given it is unlikely to ever see any reuse outside of SDCA.

Current soc-compress.c clears symmetric_rate, but it clears rate only, not clear other symmetric_channels/sample_bits. static int soc_compr_clean(...) { ... if (!snd_soc_dai_active(cpu_dai)) => cpu_dai->symmetric_rate = 0; if (!snd_soc_dai_active(codec_dai)) => codec_dai->symmetric_rate = 0; ... }; This feature was added when v3.7 kernel [1], and there was only symmetric_rate, no symmetric_channels/sample_bits in that timing. symmetric_channels/sample_bits were added in v3.14 [2], but I guess it didn't notice that soc-compress.c is updating symmetric_xxx. We are clearing symmetry_xxx by soc_pcm_set_dai_params(), but is soc-pcm.c local function. Makes it global function and clear symmetry_xxx by it. This will be used by the cs35l56.c driver to create a read-only volatile byte control. It's preferable to avoid custom control macros in codec drivers. Code maintenance is easier if all control macros are defined together in soc.h. This commit only creates this one macro that is actually going to be used. There's no point cluttering soc.h with unused macros - that just adds a maintenance burden. People can add equivalents for the other macros if they need them. 2025-04-06ASoC: core: Complete support for card rebindingCezary Rojewski
Since commit e894efef9ac7 ("ASoC: core: add support to card rebind") there is a support for card rebind. The support is only partial though. Let's consider the following scenarios both of which aim to enumerate a sound card: 1) snd_soc_add_component(comp1); (...) snd_soc_register_card(card1); 2) snd_soc_register_card(card1); (...) snd_soc_add_component(comp1); For the sake of simplicity, let comp1 be the last dependency needed for the card1 to enumerate. Case 1) will end up succeeding whereas 2) is a certain fail - snd_soc_bind_card() does not honor unbind_card_list so even a non-fatal return code of EPROBE_DEFER will cause the card to collapse. Given the typical usecase of platform_device serving as a card->dev and its probe() ending with: int carddev_probe(struct platform_device *pdev) { (...) return devm_snd_soc_register_card(dev, card); } failure to register card triggers device_unbind_cleanup() - really_probe() in dd.c. To allow for card registration to be deferred while being friendly towards existing users of devm_snd_soc_register_card(), add new card->devres_dev field, and devm_xxx() variants for card registration: devm_snd_soc_register_deferrable_card() (external) devm_snd_soc_bind_card() (internal) In essence, if requested, devm_snd_soc_bind_card() replaces snd_soc_bind_card(). The rebind procedure takes care of destroying old devres before attempting the new bind. This makes sure nothing is left hanging if binding fails and card becomes unbound but is still registered to the ASoC framework. To allow snd_soc_bind_card() to be reused by the deferrable friends, move 'client_mutex' locking to the function's callers and select between devm_xxx and non-devm_xxx variants of snd_soc_bind_card() based on card->devres_dev. So remove snd_soc_info_volsw_range() and point its users at snd_soc_info_volsw(). 2025-03-05ASoC: ops: Consistently treat platform_max as control valueCharles Keepax
This reverts commit 9bdd10d57a88 ("ASoC: ops: Shift tested values in snd_soc_put_volsw() by +min"), and makes some additional related updates. There are two ways the platform_max could be interpreted; the maximum register value, or the maximum value the control can be set to. The patch moved from treating the value as a control value to a register one. When the patch was applied it was technically correct as snd_soc_limit_volume() also used the register interpretation. However, even then most of the other usages treated platform_max as a control value, and snd_soc_limit_volume() has since been updated to also do so in commit fb9ad24485087 ("ASoC: ops: add correct range check for limiting volume"). That patch however, missed updating snd_soc_put_volsw() back to the control interpretation, and fixing snd_soc_info_volsw_range(). The control interpretation makes more sense as limiting is typically done from the machine driver, so it is appropriate to use the customer facing representation rather than the internal codec representation. Update all the code to consistently use this interpretation of platform_max. Finally, also add some comments to the soc_mixer_control struct to hopefully avoid further patches switching between the two approaches.
