2026-08-28ipv4: avoid divide by zero in fib_rebalanceZihan Xi
fib_rebalance() computes the total eligible nexthop weight in one pass and programs upper bounds in a second pass. A concurrent change to ignore_routes_with_linkdown can make the first pass return zero while the second pass sees an eligible nexthop, resulting in division by zero. If the first pass reports a zero total, set each nexthop upper bound to -1 and skip the division. This matches the IPv6 fix in commit d2c26c2911dd ("ipv6: avoid divide by zero in rt6_multipath_rebalance") and preserves the lock-free rebalance path. 2026-08-11ipv4: fix use-after-free in fib_nhc_update_mtu()Chengfeng Ye
fib_nhc_update_mtu() walks the nexthop exception table under RTNL, but RTNL does not serialize this walk with PMTU exception updates. The walk uses rcu_dereference_protected() with a constant true condition without holding fnhe_lock. The following interleaving can therefore occur: CPU 0 CPU 1 fib_nhc_update_mtu() update_or_create_fnhe() load fnhe spin_lock_bh(&fnhe_lock) fnhe_remove_oldest() unlink fnhe kfree_rcu(fnhe, rcu) <quiescent state> access fnhe after grace period KASAN reported: BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in fib_nhc_update_mtu+0x3df/0x410 Read of size 8 at addr ffff888107d49000 by task poc/90 Call Trace: fib_nhc_update_mtu+0x3df/0x410 fib_sync_mtu+0x7a/0xd0 fib_netdev_event+0x229/0x3f0 netif_set_mtu_ext+0x33a/0x570 dev_set_mtu+0x88/0x120 The same walk updates fnhe_pmtu and fnhe_mtu_locked. These fields form a pair and other writers serialize them with fnhe_lock. RCU alone prevents reclamation, but would still allow concurrent writers to leave a mixed pair. Walk the table under RCU and acquire fnhe_lock only while updating each exception. RCU keeps the current entry alive while the short critical section serializes its paired PMTU fields. This avoids holding the global lock while scanning all 2048 buckets for every nexthop. 2026-08-03ipv4: Fix fib_nlmsg_size() for RTA_VIA nexthopsZihan Xi
fib_nlmsg_size() still estimates nexthop space as if every gateway is encoded as an IPv4 RTA_GATEWAY attribute. IPv4 routes can also carry an IPv6 gateway, which fib_nexthop_info() dumps as RTA_VIA. As a result, route notifications can allocate an skb that is too small. fib_dump_info() then fails with -EMSGSIZE and rtmsg_fib() hits the WARN_ON() that marks such failures as a fib_nlmsg_size() bug. With panic_on_warn set, this becomes a kernel panic. Mirror the actual nexthop dump layout in fib_nlmsg_size(): account for IPv6 nexthop gateways dumped as RTA_VIA, for the no-header rtnexthop layout used inside RTA_MULTIPATH, and for RTA_FLOW only when it is actually present. 2026-03-29ipv4: drop ipv6_stub usage and use direct function callsFernando Fernandez Mancera
As IPv6 is built-in only, the ipv6_stub infrastructure is no longer necessary. The IPv4 stack interacts with IPv6 mainly to support IPv4 routes with IPv6 next-hops (RFC 8950). Convert all these cross-family calls from ipv6_stub to direct function calls. The fallback functions introduced previously will prevent linkage errors when CONFIG_IPV6 is disabled. 2026-02-21Convert more 'alloc_obj' cases to default GFP_KERNEL argumentsLinus Torvalds
This converts some of the visually simpler cases that have been split over multiple lines. I only did the ones that are easy to verify the resulting diff by having just that final GFP_KERNEL argument on the next line. Somebody should probably do a proper coccinelle script for this, but for me the trivial script actually resulted in an assertion failure in the middle of the script. I probably had made it a bit _too_ trivial. So after fighting that far a while I decided to just do some of the syntactically simpler cases with variations of the previous 'sed' scripts. The more syntactically complex multi-line cases would mostly really want whitespace cleanup anyway. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

This is the exact same thing as the 'alloc_obj()' version, only much smaller because there are a lot fewer users of the *alloc_flex() interface. As with alloc_obj() version, this was done entirely with mindless brute force, using the same script, except using 'flex' in the pattern rather than 'objs*'. This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) 2025-12-30net: fib: restore ECMP balance from loopbackVadim Fedorenko
Preference of nexthop with source address broke ECMP for packets with source addresses which are not in the broadcast domain, but rather added to loopback/dummy interfaces. Original behaviour was to balance over nexthops while now it uses the latest nexthop from the group. To fix the issue introduce next hop scoring system where next hops with source address equal to requested will always have higher priority. 2025-05-03ipv4: Honor "ignore_routes_with_linkdown" sysctl in nexthop selectionIdo Schimmel
Commit 32607a332cfe ("ipv4: prefer multipath nexthop that matches source address") changed IPv4 nexthop selection to prefer a nexthop whose nexthop device is assigned the specified source address for locally generated traffic. While the selection honors the "fib_multipath_use_neigh" sysctl and will not choose a nexthop with an invalid neighbour, it does not honor the "ignore_routes_with_linkdown" sysctl and can choose a nexthop without a carrier: $ sysctl net.ipv4.conf.all.ignore_routes_with_linkdown net.ipv4.conf.all.ignore_routes_with_linkdown = 1 $ ip route show 198.51.100.0/24 198.51.100.0/24 nexthop via 192.0.2.2 dev dummy1 weight 1 nexthop via 192.0.2.18 dev dummy2 weight 1 dead linkdown $ ip route get 198.51.100.1 from 192.0.2.17 198.51.100.1 from 192.0.2.17 via 192.0.2.18 dev dummy2 uid 0 Solve this by skipping over nexthops whose assigned hash upper bound is minus one, which is the value assigned to nexthops that do not have a carrier when the "ignore_routes_with_linkdown" sysctl is set. In practice, this probably does not matter a lot as the initial route lookup for the source address would not choose a nexthop that does not have a carrier in the first place, but the change does make the code clearer. 2025-04-29ipv4: fib: Fix fib_info_hash_alloc() allocation typeKees Cook
In preparation for making the kmalloc family of allocators type aware, we need to make sure that the returned type from the allocation matches the type of the variable being assigned. (Before, the allocator would always return "void *", which can be implicitly cast to any pointer type.) This was allocating many sizeof(struct hlist_head *) when it actually wanted sizeof(struct hlist_head). Luckily these are the same size. Adjust the allocation type to match the assignment. 2025-04-29ipv4: prefer multipath nexthop that matches source addressWillem de Bruijn
With multipath routes, try to ensure that packets leave on the device that is associated with the source address. Avoid the following tcpdump example: veth0 Out IP 10.1.0.2.38640 > 10.2.0.3.8000: Flags [S] veth1 Out IP 10.1.0.2.38648 > 10.2.0.3.8000: Flags [S] Which can happen easily with the most straightforward setup: ip addr add 10.0.0.1/24 dev veth0 ip addr add 10.1.0.1/24 dev veth1 ip route add 10.2.0.3 nexthop via 10.0.0.2 dev veth0 \ nexthop via 10.1.0.2 dev veth1 This is apparently considered WAI, based on the comment in ip_route_output_key_hash_rcu: * 2. Moreover, we are allowed to send packets with saddr * of another iface. --ANK It may be ok for some uses of multipath, but not all. For instance, when using two ISPs, a router may drop packets with unknown source. The behavior occurs because tcp_v4_connect makes three route lookups when establishing a connection: 1. ip_route_connect calls to select a source address, with saddr zero. 2. ip_route_connect calls again now that saddr and daddr are known. 3. ip_route_newports calls again after a source port is also chosen. With a route with multiple nexthops, each lookup may make a different choice depending on available entropy to fib_select_multipath. So it is possible for 1 to select the saddr from the first entry, but 3 to select the second entry. Leading to the above situation. Address this by preferring a match that matches the flowi4 saddr. This will make 2 and 3 make the same choice as 1. Continue to update the backup choice until a choice that matches saddr is found. Do this in fib_select_multipath itself, rather than passing an fl4_oif constraint, to avoid changing non-multipath route selection. Commit e6b45241c57a ("ipv4: reset flowi parameters on route connect") shows how that may cause regressions. Also read ipv4.sysctl_fib_multipath_use_neigh only once. No need to refresh in the loop. This does not happen in IPv6, which performs only one lookup. 2024-10-07ipv4: remove fib_devindex_hashfn()Eric Dumazet
fib_devindex_hashfn() converts a 32bit ifindex value to a 8bit hash. It makes no sense doing this from fib_info_hashfn() and fib_find_info_nh(). It is better to keep as many bits as possible to let fib_info_hashfn_result() have better spread. Only fib_info_devhash_bucket() needs to make this operation, we can 'inline' trivial fib_devindex_hashfn() in it. 2024-08-20ipv4: Centralize TOS matchingIdo Schimmel
The TOS field in the IPv4 flow information structure ('flowi4_tos') is matched by the kernel against the TOS selector in IPv4 rules and routes. The field is initialized differently by different call sites. Some treat it as DSCP (RFC 2474) and initialize all six DSCP bits, some treat it as RFC 1349 TOS and initialize it using RT_TOS() and some treat it as RFC 791 TOS and initialize it using IPTOS_RT_MASK. What is common to all these call sites is that they all initialize the lower three DSCP bits, which fits the TOS definition in the initial IPv4 specification (RFC 791). Therefore, the kernel only allows configuring IPv4 FIB rules that match on the lower three DSCP bits which are always guaranteed to be initialized by all call sites: # ip -4 rule add tos 0x1c table 100 # ip -4 rule add tos 0x3c table 100 Error: Invalid tos. While this works, it is unlikely to be very useful. RFC 791 that initially defined the TOS and IP precedence fields was updated by RFC 2474 over twenty five years ago where these fields were replaced by a single six bits DSCP field. Extending FIB rules to match on DSCP can be done by adding a new DSCP selector while maintaining the existing semantics of the TOS selector for applications that rely on that. A prerequisite for allowing FIB rules to match on DSCP is to adjust all the call sites to initialize the high order DSCP bits and remove their masking along the path to the core where the field is matched on. However, making this change alone will result in a behavior change. For example, a forwarded IPv4 packet with a DS field of 0xfc will no longer match a FIB rule that was configured with 'tos 0x1c'. This behavior change can be avoided by masking the upper three DSCP bits in 'flowi4_tos' before comparing it against the TOS selectors in FIB rules and routes. Implement the above by adding a new function that checks whether a given DSCP value matches the one specified in the IPv4 flow information structure and invoke it from the three places that currently match on 'flowi4_tos'. Use RT_TOS() for the masking of 'flowi4_tos' instead of IPTOS_RT_MASK since the latter is not uAPI and we should be able to remove it at some point. Include <linux/ip.h> in <linux/in_route.h> since the former defines IPTOS_TOS_MASK which is used in the definition of RT_TOS() in <linux/in_route.h>. 2023-10-03ipv4/fib: send notify when delete source address routesHangbin Liu
After deleting an interface address in fib_del_ifaddr(), the function scans the fib_info list for stray entries and calls fib_flush() and fib_table_flush(). Then the stray entries will be deleted silently and no RTM_DELROUTE notification will be sent. This lack of notification can make routing daemons, or monitor like `ip monitor route` miss the routing changes. e.g. + ip link add dummy1 type dummy + ip link add dummy2 type dummy + ip link set dummy1 up + ip link set dummy2 up + ip addr add 192.168.5.5/24 dev dummy1 + ip route add 7.7.7.0/24 dev dummy2 src 192.168.5.5 + ip -4 route 7.7.7.0/24 dev dummy2 scope link src 192.168.5.5 192.168.5.0/24 dev dummy1 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.5.5 + ip monitor route + ip addr del 192.168.5.5/24 dev dummy1 Deleted 192.168.5.0/24 dev dummy1 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.5.5 Deleted broadcast 192.168.5.255 dev dummy1 table local proto kernel scope link src 192.168.5.5 Deleted local 192.168.5.5 dev dummy1 table local proto kernel scope host src 192.168.5.5 As Ido reminded, fib_table_flush() isn't only called when an address is deleted, but also when an interface is deleted or put down. The lack of notification in these cases is deliberate. And commit 7c6bb7d2faaf ("net/ipv6: Add knob to skip DELROUTE message on device down") introduced a sysctl to make IPv6 behave like IPv4 in this regard. So we can't send the route delete notify blindly in fib_table_flush(). To fix this issue, let's add a new flag in "struct fib_info" to track the deleted prefer source address routes, and only send notify for them. After update: + ip monitor route + ip addr del 192.168.5.5/24 dev dummy1 Deleted 192.168.5.0/24 dev dummy1 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.5.5 Deleted broadcast 192.168.5.255 dev dummy1 table local proto kernel scope link src 192.168.5.5 Deleted local 192.168.5.5 dev dummy1 table local proto kernel scope host src 192.168.5.5 Deleted 7.7.7.0/24 dev dummy2 scope link src 192.168.5.5 Suggested-by: Thomas Haller <thaller@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Hangbin Liu <liuhangbin@gmail.com> Acked-by: Nicolas Dichtel <nicolas.dichtel@6wind.com> Reviewed-by: David Ahern <dsahern@kernel.org> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20230922075508.848925-1-liuhangbin@gmail.com Signed-off-by: Paolo Abeni <pabeni@redhat.com>

2022-12-06ipv4: Fix incorrect route flushing when source address is deletedIdo Schimmel
Cited commit added the table ID to the FIB info structure, but did not prevent structures with different table IDs from being consolidated. This can lead to routes being flushed from a VRF when an address is deleted from a different VRF. Fix by taking the table ID into account when looking for a matching FIB info. This is already done for FIB info structures backed by a nexthop object in fib_find_info_nh(). Add test cases that fail before the fix: # ./fib_tests.sh -t ipv4_del_addr IPv4 delete address route tests Regular FIB info TEST: Route removed from VRF when source address deleted [ OK ] TEST: Route in default VRF not removed [ OK ] TEST: Route removed in default VRF when source address deleted [ OK ] TEST: Route in VRF is not removed by address delete [ OK ] Identical FIB info with different table ID TEST: Route removed from VRF when source address deleted [FAIL] TEST: Route in default VRF not removed [ OK ] RTNETLINK answers: File exists TEST: Route removed in default VRF when source address deleted [ OK ] TEST: Route in VRF is not removed by address delete [FAIL] Tests passed: 6 Tests failed: 2 And pass after: # ./fib_tests.sh -t ipv4_del_addr IPv4 delete address route tests Regular FIB info TEST: Route removed from VRF when source address deleted [ OK ] TEST: Route in default VRF not removed [ OK ] TEST: Route removed in default VRF when source address deleted [ OK ] TEST: Route in VRF is not removed by address delete [ OK ] Identical FIB info with different table ID TEST: Route removed from VRF when source address deleted [ OK ] TEST: Route in default VRF not removed [ OK ] TEST: Route removed in default VRF when source address deleted [ OK ] TEST: Route in VRF is not removed by address delete [ OK ] Tests passed: 8 Tests failed: 0 Fixes: 5a56a0b3a45d ("net: Don't delete routes in different VRFs") Signed-off-by: Ido Schimmel <idosch@nvidia.com> Reviewed-by: David Ahern <dsahern@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Jakub Kicinski <kuba@kernel.org>
2022-11-28ipv4: Fix route deletion when nexthop info is not specifiedIdo Schimmel
When the kernel receives a route deletion request from user space it tries to delete a route that matches the route attributes specified in the request. If only prefix information is specified in the request, the kernel should delete the first matching FIB alias regardless of its associated FIB info. However, an error is currently returned when the FIB info is backed by a nexthop object: # ip nexthop add id 1 via 192.0.2.2 dev dummy10 # ip route add 198.51.100.0/24 nhid 1 # ip route del 198.51.100.0/24 RTNETLINK answers: No such process Fix by matching on such a FIB info when legacy nexthop attributes are not specified in the request. An earlier check already covers the case where a nexthop ID is specified in the request. Add tests that cover these flows. Before the fix: # ./fib_nexthops.sh -t ipv4_fcnal ... TEST: Delete route when not specifying nexthop attributes [FAIL] Tests passed: 11 Tests failed: 1 After the fix: # ./fib_nexthops.sh -t ipv4_fcnal ... 2022-07-14ip: fix dflt addr selection for connected nexthopNicolas Dichtel
When a nexthop is added, without a gw address, the default scope was set to 'host'. Thus, when a source address is selected, 127.0.0.1 may be chosen but rejected when the route is used. When using a route without a nexthop id, the scope can be configured in the route, thus the problem doesn't exist. To explain more deeply: when a user creates a nexthop, it cannot specify the scope. To create it, the function nh_create_ipv4() calls fib_check_nh() with scope set to 0. fib_check_nh() calls fib_check_nh_nongw() wich was setting scope to 'host'. Then, nh_create_ipv4() calls fib_info_update_nhc_saddr() with scope set to 'host'. The src addr is chosen before the route is inserted. When a 'standard' route (ie without a reference to a nexthop) is added, fib_create_info() calls fib_info_update_nhc_saddr() with the scope set by the user. iproute2 set the scope to 'link' by default. Here is a way to reproduce the problem: ip netns add foo ip -n foo link set lo up ip netns add bar ip -n bar link set lo up sleep 1 ip -n foo link add name eth0 type dummy ip -n foo link set eth0 up ip -n foo address add 192.168.0.1/24 dev eth0 ip -n foo link add name veth0 type veth peer name veth1 netns bar ip -n foo link set veth0 up ip -n bar link set veth1 up ip -n bar address add 192.168.1.1/32 dev veth1 ip -n bar route add default dev veth1 ip -n foo nexthop add id 1 dev veth0 ip -n foo route add 192.168.1.1 nhid 1 Try to get/use the route: > $ ip -n foo route get 192.168.1.1 > RTNETLINK answers: Invalid argument > $ ip netns exec foo ping -c1 192.168.1.1 > ping: connect: Invalid argument Try without nexthop group (iproute2 sets scope to 'link' by dflt): ip -n foo route del 192.168.1.1 ip -n foo route add 192.168.1.1 dev veth0 Try to get/use the route: > $ ip -n foo route get 192.168.1.1 > 192.168.1.1 dev veth0 src 192.168.0.1 uid 0 > cache > $ ip netns exec foo ping -c1 192.168.1.1 > PING 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1) 56(84) bytes of data. > 64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.039 ms > > --- 192.168.1.1 ping statistics --- > 1 packets transmitted, 1 received, 0% packet loss, time 0ms > rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.039/0.039/0.039/0.000 ms CC: stable@vger.kernel.org Fixes: 597cfe4fc339 ("nexthop: Add support for IPv4 nexthops") Reported-by: Edwin Brossette <edwin.brossette@6wind.com> Signed-off-by: Nicolas Dichtel <nicolas.dichtel@6wind.com> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20220713114853.29406-1-nicolas.dichtel@6wind.com Signed-off-by: Paolo Abeni <pabeni@redhat.com>
