2026-07-21wifi: mac80211: always send regulatory connectivity elementJohannes Berg
The spec says to include it if the STA is "capable of operating as STA 6G", which is a bit unclear because this is defined at a STA level and not at the MLD level or so, but WFA requires this to be included. Either way, the element is completely advisory and intended mostly for debugging (and perhaps a bit steering), so just include it in association request all the time if 6 GHz is supported. To determine what exactly to include, check all the channels that aren't disabled. That way, it ends up being a lowest common denominator, which is most useful for steering etc. Signed-off-by: Johannes Berg <johannes.berg@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Miri Korenblit <miriam.rachel.korenblit@intel.com> Link: https://patch.msgid.link/20260715210322.02a4f3fced21.I94bbd08ac38001e11d5143a8b3f54dcea8ae8e15@changeid Signed-off-by: Johannes Berg <johannes.berg@intel.com>
2026-07-06wifi: mac80211: validate extension-frame layout before RXZhao Li
Extension frames only have the extension header at the regular 802.11 header offset. The generic RX path can still reach helpers and interface dispatch code that read regular header address fields before unsupported extension subtypes are dropped. mac80211 currently only handles S1G beacon extension frames. Drop other extension subtypes before they can reach regular-header RX processing. For S1G beacons, linearize the SKB with the management-frame path and require the fixed S1G beacon header, including optional fixed fields indicated by frame control, before generic RX dispatch. Route S1G beacons through the station/default-link RX path without regular-header station lookup. Avoid regular-header address reads in the mac80211 RX paths that process S1G extension beacons, including accept-frame, duplicate-detection, address-copy, and MLO address-translation paths. Also make ieee80211_get_bssid() length-safe before returning the S1G source-address pointer. 2026-05-28wifi: mac80211: add an option to filter out a channel in combinations checkMiri Korenblit
Sometimes, ieee80211_check_combinations fails, but it is hard to know why exactly. We will have to return an array of reasons, one per combination. In cases where we want to check if it failed because there are not enough chanctxs (and maybe remove one if needed), we can just not fill in that chanctx(s) in iface_combination_params::num_different_channels in ieee80211_fill_ifcomb_params, so that chanctx(s) won't be taken into account. To allow that, add an option to pass a callback to ieee80211_fill_ifcomb_params. This callback will be called for each chanctx we consider to count in num_different_channels and will return whether or not this chanctx should be skipped and not counted. This mechanism will be used later. 2026-05-20wifi: mac80211: don't call ieee80211_handle_reconfig_failure when not neededMiri Korenblit
In case reconfiguration of NAN fails, we call ieee80211_handle_reconfig_failure, that marks all interfaces as not in the driver. Then, at the error path of the reconfig, cfg80211_shutdown_all_interfaces is called to destroy all the interfaces. If we have any other interface but the NAN one, for example a BSS station, then when its state (links, stations) will be removed, we won't tell the driver about this, because we will think that the interfaces are not in the driver, and then drivers might remain with dangling pointers to objects like stations and links (at least for iwlwifi this is the case). ieee80211_handle_reconfig_failure is meant to be called after we cleaned up the state in the driver, there is no reason to call it for NAN reconfiguration failure. Fix the code to just warn in such a case, as we do in other error paths in reconfig where it is too complicated to rewind. 2026-05-05wifi: mac80211: mlme: use NPCA chandef if capableJohannes Berg
If the device is capable, parse the AP chandef with NPCA. Also advertise the other NPCA operational parameters to the underlying driver and track if they change (though not with BSS critical update etc. yet) Since NPCA can only be enabled when the chanctx isn't shared, the channel context code needs to clear/set npca.enabled in the per-link configuration, except during association since we can't enable NPCA before having completed association. In this case, set npca.enabled during the association process. 2026-05-05wifi: cfg80211/mac80211: Add NL80211_IFTYPE_PD for PD PASN and PMSR operationsPeddolla Harshavardhan Reddy
Add a new wdev-only interface type NL80211_IFTYPE_PD to support Proximity Detection (PD) operations such as PASN and peer measurement operations. This interface type operates without a netdev, similar to P2P_DEVICE and NAN interfaces. Implement support across cfg80211 and mac80211 layers with PD-specific checks gated by the NL80211_EXT_FEATURE_SECURE_RTT feature flag, management frame registration and transmission capabilities, and proper channel context handling where PD interfaces are excluded from bandwidth calculations. Update mac80211 to recognize the new interface type in the relevant paths for this management-only interface. PD discovery can be performed on any available interface, such as NL80211_IFTYPE_STATION. If PD/PMSR uses the MAC address of an existing interface type, such as NL80211_IFTYPE_STATION, then pairing and measurement shall use that same interface. If PD/PMSR uses a different MAC address, such as a random MAC address, then pairing and measurement can be performed on a new NL80211_IFTYPE_PD interface created with that random MAC address. 2026-04-28wifi: mac80211: simplify ieee80211_sta_rx_bw_to_chan_width()Johannes Berg
This function is only called for at least HT capable stations, so doesn't need to differentiate 20/20_NOHT. Also, the check for VHT 160 MHz support is wrong, since a station could have support for both and the AP is using 80+80, but nothing cares anyway, so we don't need that. Simplify the function and move it to util.c since it now no longer is related to VHT, and also doesn't need a station. Also use the new function in ieee80211_get_sta_bw() for the chandef calculations, it just needs to handle the 20/20-noht separately; while at it fix that to handle HE stations. 2026-04-07wifi: mac80211: add NAN local schedule supportMiri Korenblit
A NAN local schedule consist of a list of NAN channels, and an array that maps time slots to the channel it is scheduled to (or NULL to indicate unscheduled). A NAN channel is the configuration of a channel which is used for NAN operations. It is a new type of chanctx user (before, the only user is a link). A NAN channel may not have a chanctx assigned if it is ULWed out. A NAN channel may or may not be scheduled (for example, user space may want to prepare the resources before the actual schedule is configured). Add management of the NAN local schedule. Since we introduce a new chanctx user, also adjust the different for_each_chanctx_user_* macros to visit also the NAN channels and take those into account. This new interface type represents a NAN data interface (NDI). It is used for data communication with NAN peers. An NDI interface is started when a new NAN data path is about to be established, and is stopped after the NAN data path is terminated. - An NDI interface can only be started if the NMI is running, and NAN is started. - Before the NMI is stopped, the NDI interfaces will be stopped. 2026-03-06wifi: move action code from per-type frame structsJohannes Berg
The action code actually serves to identify the type of action frame, so it really isn't part of the per-type structure. Pull it out and have it in the general action frame format. In theory, whether or not the action code is present in this way is up to each category, but all categories that are defined right now all have that value. While at it, and since this change requires changing all users, remove the 'u' and make it an anonymous union in this case, so that all code using this changes. Change IEEE80211_MIN_ACTION_SIZE to take an argument which says how much of the frame is needed, e.g. category, action_code or the specific frame type that's defined in the union. Again this also ensures that all code is updated. In some cases, fix bugs where the SKB length was checked after having accessed beyond the checked length, in particular in FTM code, e.g. ieee80211_is_ftm(). 2026-02-21Convert more 'alloc_obj' cases to default GFP_KERNEL argumentsLinus Torvalds
This converts some of the visually simpler cases that have been split over multiple lines. I only did the ones that are easy to verify the resulting diff by having just that final GFP_KERNEL argument on the next line. Somebody should probably do a proper coccinelle script for this, but for me the trivial script actually resulted in an assertion failure in the middle of the script. I probably had made it a bit _too_ trivial. So after fighting that far a while I decided to just do some of the syntactically simpler cases with variations of the previous 'sed' scripts. The more syntactically complex multi-line cases would mostly really want whitespace cleanup anyway. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2026-02-02wifi: mac80211: use wiphy_hrtimer_work for CAC timeoutAmith A
Prior initiating communication in a DFS channel, there should be a monitoring of RADAR in that channel for a minimum of 600 seconds if it is a Weather RADAR channel and 60 seconds for other DFS channels. This Channel Availability Check(CAC) is currently implemented by scheduling a work item for execution with a delay equal to an appropriate timeout. But this work item is observed to take more delay than specified (4-5 seconds in regular DFS channels and 25-30 seconds in Weather RADAR channels). Even though this delay is expected in case of delayed work queue as there is no guarantee that the work will be scheduled exactly after the specified delay, a delay of more than 20 seconds is too much for the AP to be in non-operational state. Recently commit 7ceba45a6658 ("wifi: cfg80211: add an hrtimer based delayed work item") added an infrastructure to overcome this issue by supporting high resolution timers for mac80211 delayed work, which do not have this timeout latency. Switch the CAC timeout to use this infrastructure, so the CAC completion handling is triggered with tighter timing and reduced latency. 2026-01-14wifi: mac80211: Check for MLE before appending in Authentication frameKavita Kavita
Currently, in MLO connections, userspace constructs most of the Authentication frame body, excluding the Multi-Link element (MLE), which mac80211 appends later in ieee80211_send_auth(). At present, mac80211 always adds the MLE itself, since userspace (e.g. wpa_supplicant) does not yet include it. However, for new authentication protocols such as Enhanced Privacy Protection Key Exchange (EPPKE), as specified in "IEEE P802.11bi/D3.0 section 12.16.9", the MLE must be included in userspace so that the Message Integrity Code (MIC) can be computed correctly over the complete frame body. Table 9-71 specifies that the MIC is mandatory. If mac80211 appends the MLE again, the Authentication frame becomes invalid. Add a check in ieee80211_send_auth() to detect whether the MLE is already present in the Authentication frame body before appending. Skip the append if the MLE exists, otherwise add it as before. 2026-01-12wifi: mac80211: improve station iteration ergonomicsJohannes Berg
Right now, the only way to iterate stations is to declare an iterator function, possibly data structure to use, and pass all that to the iteration helper function. This is annoying, and there's really no inherent need for it. Add a new for_each_station() macro that does the iteration in a more ergonomic way. 2026-01-12wifi: mac80211: improve interface iteration ergonomicsJohannes Berg
Right now, the only way to iterate interfaces is to declare an iterator function, possibly data structure to use, and pass all that to the iteration helper function. This is annoying, and there's really no inherent need for it, except it was easier to implement with the iflist mutex, but that's not used much now. Add a new for_each_interface() macro that does the iteration in a more ergonomic way. To avoid even more exported functions, do the old ieee80211_iterate_active_interfaces_mtx() as an inline using the new way, which may also let the compiler optimise it a bit more, e.g. via inlining the iterator function. Also provide for_each_active_interface() for the common case of just iterating active interfaces. 2025-11-11wifi: mac80211: track MU-MIMO configuration on disabled interfacesBenjamin Berg
For monitoring, userspace will try to configure the VIF sdata, while the driver may see the monitor_sdata that is created when only monitor interfaces are up. This causes the odd situation that it may not be possible to store the MU-MIMO configuration on monitor_sdata. Fix this by storing that information on the VIF sdata and updating the monitor_sdata when available and the interface is up. Also, adjust the code that adds monitor_sdata so that it will configure MU-MIMO based on the newly added interface or one of the existing ones. This should give a mostly consistent behaviour when configuring MU-MIMO on sniffer interfaces. Should the user configure MU-MIMO on multiple sniffer interfaces, then mac80211 will simply select one of the configurations. This behaviour should be good enough and avoids breaking user expectations in the common scenarios. 2025-11-10wifi: mac80211: remove chanctx to link back-referencesJohannes Berg
Each link can currently use a chanctx and have another one reserved, and both of these are also tracked backwards in the assigned_links and reserved_links lists. If we consider that there aren't *that* many links, this duplicate book- keeping isn't necessary. (I think it used to be necessary before the wiphy locking changes, when chanctx_mtx existed, because we couldn't do any interface iterations while holding only chanctx_mtx.) Additionally, for NAN, we're going to want to track which chanctxs are in use by the (group of) NAN interfaces. For those, links don't really make sense as such, so chanctxs need to be assigned to a different data structure. Thus, as a first step, remove those back-lists of users (right now only links) of each channel context. This is a very basic conversion, ieee80211_vif_use_reserved_switch() should made to iterate smarter. 2025-09-04wifi: mac80211: simplify return value handling of ↵Aditya Kumar Singh
cfg80211_get_radio_idx_by_chan() In several instances where cfg80211_get_radio_idx_by_chan() is called, redundant checks are performed across function — such as verifying if wiphy->n_radio < 2 or if the returned index is negative. These checks are unnecessary, as the return value can be directly compared. Moreover, the function can be safely called even when radio-level properties are not explicitly advertised since in such case in each call it is going to get same error value. Therefore, simplify the usage of this function across all such cases by removing redundant conditions and relying on the return value directly. 2025-07-10wifi: mac80211: add the virtual monitor after reconfig completeMiri Korenblit
In reconfig we add the virtual monitor in 2 cases: 1. If we are resuming (it was deleted on suspend) 2. If it was added after an error but before the reconfig (due to the last non-monitor interface removal). In the second case, the removal of the non-monitor interface will succeed but the addition of the virtual monitor will fail, so we add it in the reconfig. The problem is that we mislead the driver to think that this is an existing interface that is getting re-added - while it is actually a completely new interface from the drivers' point of view. Some drivers act differently when a interface is re-added. For example, it might not initialize things because they were already initialized. Such drivers will - in this case - be left with a partialy initialized vif. To fix it, add the virtual monitor after reconfig_complete, so the driver will know that this is a completely new interface. Implement dot11ExtendedRegInfoSupport to advertise non-AP station regulatory power capability as part of regulatory connectivity element in (Re)Association request frames so that AP can achieve maximum client connectivity. Control field which was interpreted using value of 3-bits B5 to B3, now uses value of 4-bits B6 to B3 to interpret the type of AP. Hence update IEEE80211_HE_6GHZ_OPER_CTRL_REG_INFO to parse 4-bits control field. If older AP still updates only 3-bits value of control field, station can still interpret the value as per section E.2.7 of IEEE 802.11 REVme D7.0 and support the appropriate AP type. Also update IEEE80211_6GHZ_CTRL_REG_INDOOR_SP_AP as the value of standard power AP is changed to 8 instead of 4 so that AP can support both LPI AP and SP AP to maximize the connectivity with stations. 2025-06-24wifi: cfg80211/mac80211: Add support to get radio indexRoopni Devanathan
Currently, per-radio attributes are set on per-phy basis, i.e., all the radios present in a wiphy will take attributes values sent from user. But each radio in a wiphy can get different values from userspace based on its requirement. To extend support to set per-radio attributes, add support to get radio index from userspace. Add an NL attribute - NL80211_ATTR_WIPHY_RADIO_INDEX, to get user specified radio index for which attributes should be changed. Pass this to individual drivers, so that the drivers can use this radio index to change per-radio attributes when necessary. Currently, per-radio attributes identified are: NL80211_ATTR_WIPHY_TX_POWER_LEVEL NL80211_ATTR_WIPHY_ANTENNA_TX NL80211_ATTR_WIPHY_ANTENNA_RX NL80211_ATTR_WIPHY_RETRY_SHORT NL80211_ATTR_WIPHY_RETRY_LONG NL80211_ATTR_WIPHY_FRAG_THRESHOLD NL80211_ATTR_WIPHY_RTS_THRESHOLD NL80211_ATTR_WIPHY_COVERAGE_CLASS NL80211_ATTR_TXQ_LIMIT NL80211_ATTR_TXQ_MEMORY_LIMIT NL80211_ATTR_TXQ_QUANTUM By default, the radio index is set to -1. This means the attribute should be treated as a global configuration. If the user has not specified any index, then the radio index passed to individual drivers would be -1. This would indicate that the attribute applies to all radios in that wiphy. Therefore, add link_id as an additional argument in supporting API's for filling sinfo structure correctly. Link_id is set to -1 for non-ML station and corresponding link_id for ML stations. In supporting API's for filling sinfo structure, check for link_id, if link_id < 0, fill the sinfo structure from sta->deflink, otherwise fill from sta->link[link_id]. 2025-06-20wifi: mac80211: Allow DFS/CSA on a radio if scan is ongoing on another radioAditya Kumar Singh
Currently, in multi-radio wiphy cases, if a scan is ongoing on one radio, -EBUSY is returned when DFS or a channel switch is initiated on another radio. Because of this, an MLD AP with one radio (link) in an ongoing scan cannot initiate DFS or a channel switch on another radio (link). In multi-radio wiphy cases, multiple radios are grouped under a single wiphy. Hence, if a scan is ongoing on one underlying radio and DFS or a channel switch is requested on a different underlying radio of the same wiphy, these operations can be allowed simultaneously. Add logic to check the underlying radio used for the ongoing scan. If the radio on which DFS or a channel switch is requested is not being used for the scan, allow the operation; otherwise, return -EBUSY.
