2026-07-21sctp: close UDP tunnel sockets during netns teardownZhiling Zou
proc_sctp_do_udp_port() starts per-net SCTP UDP tunneling sockets when net.sctp.udp_port is set, and stops/restarts them when the sysctl value changes. The netns exit path does not stop these sockets, so a namespace can be torn down while its SCTP UDP tunnel sockets are still installed. Close the UDP tunnel sockets from sctp_ctrlsock_exit() after unregistering the per-net sysctl table. This prevents new sysctl writes from racing in while the sockets are being released, and closes the sockets before the control socket is destroyed. 2026-07-21sctp: avoid auth_enable sysctl UAF during netns teardownZhiling Zou
proc_sctp_do_auth() updates the SCTP control socket after changing net.sctp.auth_enable. The handler gets the per-net SCTP state from ctl->data, so an already opened sysctl file can still target a network namespace while that namespace is being torn down. SCTP previously registered its per-net sysctls from sctp_defaults_init(), while the control socket is created later from sctp_ctrlsock_init(). This exposed a window during initialization where auth_enable was writable before net->sctp.ctl_sock existed, and a teardown window where auth_enable stayed writable after inet_ctl_sock_destroy() had released the control socket. Move the per-net SCTP sysctl registration into sctp_ctrlsock_init() after sctp_ctl_sock_init() succeeds, and unregister the sysctl table before destroying the control socket in sctp_ctrlsock_exit(). If sysctl registration fails after the control socket was created, destroy the control socket in the same init path. Make sctp_sysctl_net_unregister() tolerate a missing header and clear the saved pointer so init-error and exit paths can safely share the unregister helper. 2026-06-30sctp: fix addr_wq_timer race in sctp_free_addr_wq()Xin Long
sctp_free_addr_wq() previously removed addr_wq_timer using timer_delete() while holding addr_wq_lock. However, timer_delete() does not guarantee that a currently running timer handler has completed. This allows a race with sctp_addr_wq_timeout_handler(), where the handler may still run after addr_waitq has been freed, acquire addr_wq_lock, and access freed memory, leading to a use-after-free. Fix this by calling timer_shutdown_sync() before taking addr_wq_lock. This guarantees that any in-flight timer handler has finished and prevents the timer from being re-armed during teardown, making subsequent cleanup safe. 2026-05-05udp_tunnel: Pass struct sock to udp_tunnel_sock_release().Kuniyuki Iwashima
None of the udp_tunnel users need struct socket in their fast paths; it is only used for tunnel setup / teardown. While the UDP tunnel interface accepts struct socket, this encourages users to store the pointer unnecessarily. This leads to extra dereferences when accessing struct sock fields (e.g., sk->sk_user_data instead of sock->sk->sk_user_data). Furthermore, these dereferences necessitate synchronize_rcu() in udp_tunnel_sock_release() to protect the fast paths from sock_orphan() setting sk->sk_socket to NULL. This overhead can be avoided if users store the struct sock pointer directly in their private structures. As a prep, let's change udp_tunnel_sock_release() to take struct sock instead of struct socket. 2026-04-13sctp: disable BH before calling udp_tunnel_xmit_skb()Xin Long
udp_tunnel_xmit_skb() / udp_tunnel6_xmit_skb() are expected to run with BH disabled. After commit 6f1a9140ecda ("add xmit recursion limit to tunnel xmit functions"), on the path: udp(6)_tunnel_xmit_skb() -> ip(6)tunnel_xmit() dev_xmit_recursion_inc()/dec() must stay balanced on the same CPU. Without local_bh_disable(), the context may move between CPUs, which can break the inc/dec pairing. This may lead to incorrect recursion level detection and cause packets to be dropped in ip(6)_tunnel_xmit() or __dev_queue_xmit(). Fix it by disabling BH around both IPv4 and IPv6 SCTP UDP xmit paths. In my testing, after enabling the SCTP over UDP: # ip net exec ha sysctl -w net.sctp.udp_port=9899 # ip net exec ha sysctl -w net.sctp.encap_port=9899 # ip net exec hb sysctl -w net.sctp.udp_port=9899 # ip net exec hb sysctl -w net.sctp.encap_port=9899 # ip net exec ha iperf3 -s - without this patch: # ip net exec hb iperf3 -c 192.168.0.1 --sctp [ 5] 0.00-10.00 sec 37.2 MBytes 31.2 Mbits/sec sender [ 5] 0.00-10.00 sec 37.1 MBytes 31.1 Mbits/sec receiver - with this patch: # ip net exec hb iperf3 -c 192.168.0.1 --sctp [ 5] 0.00-10.00 sec 3.14 GBytes 2.69 Gbits/sec sender [ 5] 0.00-10.00 sec 3.14 GBytes 2.69 Gbits/sec receiver Fixes: 6f1a9140ecda ("net: add xmit recursion limit to tunnel xmit functions") Fixes: 046c052b475e ("sctp: enable udp tunneling socks") Signed-off-by: Xin Long <lucien.xin@gmail.com> Acked-by: Marcelo Ricardo Leitner <marcelo.leitner@gmail.com> Link: https://patch.msgid.link/c874a8548221dcd56ff03c65ba75a74e6cf99119.1776017727.git.lucien.xin@gmail.com Signed-off-by: Jakub Kicinski <kuba@kernel.org>
2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate conversion. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) (where TYPE may also be *VAR) The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning "TYPE *". Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <kees@kernel.org>

2025-10-27sctp: Don't call sk->sk_prot->init() in sctp_v[46]_create_accept_sk().Kuniyuki Iwashima
sctp_accept() calls sctp_v[46]_create_accept_sk() to allocate a new socket and calls sctp_sock_migrate() to copy fields from the parent socket to the new socket. sctp_v[46]_create_accept_sk() calls sctp_init_sock() to initialise sctp_sock, but most fields are overwritten by sctp_copy_descendant() called from sctp_sock_migrate(). Things done in sctp_init_sock() but not in sctp_sock_migrate() are the following: 1. Copy sk->sk_gso 2. Copy sk->sk_destruct (sctp_v6_init_sock()) 3. Allocate sctp_sock.ep 4. Initialise sctp_sock.pd_lobby 5. Count sk_sockets_allocated_inc(), sock_prot_inuse_add(), and SCTP_DBG_OBJCNT_INC() Let's do these in sctp_copy_sock() and sctp_sock_migrate() and avoid calling sk->sk_prot->init() in sctp_v[46]_create_accept_sk(). 2025-08-26ipv4: Convert ->flowi4_tos to dscp_t.Guillaume Nault
Convert the ->flowic_tos field of struct flowi_common from __u8 to dscp_t, rename it ->flowic_dscp and propagate these changes to struct flowi and struct flowi4. We've had several bugs in the past where ECN bits could interfere with IPv4 routing, because these bits were not properly cleared when setting ->flowi4_tos. These bugs should be fixed now and the dscp_t type has been introduced to ensure that variables carrying DSCP values don't accidentally have any ECN bits set. Several variables and structure fields have been converted to dscp_t already, but the main IPv4 routing structure, struct flowi4, is still using a __u8. To avoid any future regression, this patch converts it to dscp_t. There are many users to convert at once. Fortunately, around half of ->flowi4_tos users already have a dscp_t value at hand, which they currently convert to __u8 using inet_dscp_to_dsfield(). For all of these users, we just need to drop that conversion. But, although we try to do the __u8 <-> dscp_t conversions at the boundaries of the network or of user space, some places still store TOS/DSCP variables as __u8 in core networking code. Those can hardly be converted either because the data structure is part of UAPI or because the same variable or field is also used for handling ECN in other parts of the code. In all of these cases where we don't have a dscp_t variable at hand, we need to use inet_dsfield_to_dscp() when interacting with ->flowi4_dscp. 2025-08-19sctp: Convert cookie authentication to use HMAC-SHA256Eric Biggers
Convert SCTP cookies to use HMAC-SHA256, instead of the previous choice of the legacy algorithms HMAC-MD5 and HMAC-SHA1. Simplify and optimize the code by using the HMAC-SHA256 library instead of crypto_shash, and by preparing the HMAC key when it is generated instead of per-operation. This doesn't break compatibility, since the cookie format is an implementation detail, not part of the SCTP protocol itself. Note that the cookie size doesn't change either. The HMAC field was already 32 bytes, even though previously at most 20 bytes were actually compared. 32 bytes exactly fits an untruncated HMAC-SHA256 value. So, although we could safely truncate the MAC to something slightly shorter, for now just keep the cookie size the same. I also considered SipHash, but that would generate only 8-byte MACs. An 8-byte MAC *might* suffice here. However, there's quite a lot of information in the SCTP cookies: more than in TCP SYN cookies. So absent an analysis that occasional forgeries of all that information is okay in SCTP, I errored on the side of caution. Remove HMAC-MD5 and HMAC-SHA1 as options, since the new HMAC-SHA256 option is just better. It's faster as well as more secure. For example, benchmarking on x86_64, cookie authentication is now nearly 3x as fast as the previous default choice and implementation of HMAC-MD5. Also just make the kernel always support cookie authentication if SCTP is supported at all, rather than making it optional in the build. (It was sort of optional before, but it didn't really work properly. E.g., a kernel with CONFIG_SCTP_COOKIE_HMAC_MD5=n still supported HMAC-MD5 cookie authentication if CONFIG_CRYPTO_HMAC and CONFIG_CRYPTO_MD5 happened to be enabled in the kconfig for other reasons.) 2023-06-02ipv4: Drop tos parameter from flowi4_update_output()Guillaume Nault
Callers of flowi4_update_output() never try to update ->flowi4_tos: * ip_route_connect() updates ->flowi4_tos with its own current value. * ip_route_newports() has two users: tcp_v4_connect() and dccp_v4_connect. Both initialise fl4 with ip_route_connect(), which in turn sets ->flowi4_tos with RT_TOS(inet_sk(sk)->tos) and ->flowi4_scope based on SOCK_LOCALROUTE. Then ip_route_newports() updates ->flowi4_tos with RT_CONN_FLAGS(sk), which is the same as RT_TOS(inet_sk(sk)->tos), unless SOCK_LOCALROUTE is set on the socket. In that case, the lowest order bit is set to 1, to eventually inform ip_route_output_key_hash() to restrict the scope to RT_SCOPE_LINK. This is equivalent to properly setting ->flowi4_scope as ip_route_connect() did. * ip_vs_xmit.c initialises ->flowi4_tos with memset(0), then calls flowi4_update_output() with tos=0. * sctp_v4_get_dst() uses the same RT_CONN_FLAGS_TOS() when initialising ->flowi4_tos and when calling flowi4_update_output(). In the end, ->flowi4_tos never changes. So let's just drop the tos parameter. This will simplify the conversion of ->flowi4_tos from __u8 to dscp_t. 2022-11-18sctp: add dif and sdif check in asoc and ep lookupXin Long
This patch at first adds a pernet global l3mdev_accept to decide if it accepts the packets from a l3mdev when a SCTP socket doesn't bind to any interface. It's set to 1 to avoid any possible incompatible issue, and in next patch, a sysctl will be introduced to allow to change it. Then similar to inet/udp_sk_bound_dev_eq(), sctp_sk_bound_dev_eq() is added to check either dif or sdif is equal to sk_bound_dev_if, and to check sid is 0 or l3mdev_accept is 1 if sk_bound_dev_if is not set. This function is used to match a association or a endpoint, namely called by sctp_addrs_lookup_transport() and sctp_endpoint_is_match(). All functions that needs updating are: sctp_rcv(): asoc: __sctp_rcv_lookup() __sctp_lookup_association() -> sctp_addrs_lookup_transport() __sctp_rcv_lookup_harder() __sctp_rcv_init_lookup() __sctp_lookup_association() -> sctp_addrs_lookup_transport() __sctp_rcv_walk_lookup() __sctp_rcv_asconf_lookup() __sctp_lookup_association() -> sctp_addrs_lookup_transport() ep: __sctp_rcv_lookup_endpoint() -> sctp_endpoint_is_match() sctp_connect(): sctp_endpoint_is_peeled_off() __sctp_lookup_association() sctp_has_association() sctp_lookup_association() __sctp_lookup_association() -> sctp_addrs_lookup_transport() sctp_diag_dump_one(): sctp_transport_lookup_process() -> sctp_addrs_lookup_transport() Signed-off-by: Xin Long <lucien.xin@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. 2021-11-06include/linux/mm.h: move nr_free_buffer_pages from swap.h to mm.hMianhan Liu
nr_free_buffer_pages could be exposed through mm.h instead of swap.h. The advantage of this change is that it can reduce the obsolete includes. For example, net/ipv4/tcp.c wouldn't need swap.h any more since it has already included mm.h. Similarly, after checking all the other files, it comes that tcp.c, udp.c meter.c ,... follow the same rule, so these files can have swap.h removed too. Moreover, after preprocessing all the files that use nr_free_buffer_pages, it turns out that those files have already included mm.h.Thus, we can move nr_free_buffer_pages from swap.h to mm.h safely. This change will not affect the compilation of other files. 2021-06-22sctp: process sctp over udp icmp err on sctp sideXin Long
Previously, sctp over udp was using udp tunnel's icmp err process, which only does sk lookup on sctp side. However for sctp's icmp error process, there are more things to do, like syncing assoc pmtu/retransmit packets for toobig type err, and starting proto_unreach_timer for unreach type err etc. Now after adding PLPMTUD, which also requires to process toobig type err on sctp side. This patch is to process icmp err on sctp side by parsing the type/code/info in .encap_err_lookup and call sctp's icmp processing functions. Note as the 'redirect' err process needs to know the outer ip(v6) header's, we have to leave it to udp(v6)_err to handle it. 2020-10-30sctp: support for sending packet over udp4 sockXin Long
This patch does what the rfc6951#section-5.3 says for ipv4: "Within the UDP header, the source port MUST be the local UDP encapsulation port number of the SCTP stack, and the destination port MUST be the remote UDP encapsulation port number maintained for the association and the destination address to which the packet is sent (see Section 5.1). Because the SCTP packet is the UDP payload, the length of the UDP packet MUST be the length of the SCTP packet plus the size of the UDP header. The SCTP checksum MUST be computed for IPv4 and IPv6, and the UDP checksum SHOULD be computed for IPv4 and IPv6." Some places need to be adjusted in sctp_packet_transmit(): 1. For non-gso packets, when transport's encap_port is set, sctp checksum has to be done in sctp_packet_pack(), as the outer udp will use ip_summed = CHECKSUM_PARTIAL to do the offload setting for checksum. 2. Delay calling dst_clone() and skb_dst_set() for non-udp packets until sctp_v4_xmit(), as for udp packets, skb_dst_set() is not needed before calling udp_tunnel_xmit_skb(). then in sctp_v4_xmit(): 1. Go to udp_tunnel_xmit_skb() only when transport->encap_port and net->sctp.udp_port both are set, as these are one for dst port and another for src port. 2. For gso packet, SKB_GSO_UDP_TUNNEL_CSUM is set for gso_type, and with this udp checksum can be done in __skb_udp_tunnel_segment() for each segments after the sctp gso. 3. inner_mac_header and inner_transport_header are set, as these will be needed in __skb_udp_tunnel_segment() to find the right headers. 4. df and ttl are calculated, as these are the required params by udp_tunnel_xmit_skb(). 5. nocheck param has to be false, as "the UDP checksum SHOULD be computed for IPv4 and IPv6", says in rfc6951#section-5.3. v1->v2: - Use sp->udp_port instead in sctp_v4_xmit(), which is more safe. 2020-10-30sctp: allow changing transport encap_port by peer packetsXin Long
As rfc6951#section-5.4 says: "After finding the SCTP association (which includes checking the verification tag), the UDP source port MUST be stored as the encapsulation port for the destination address the SCTP packet is received from (see Section 5.1). When a non-encapsulated SCTP packet is received by the SCTP stack, the encapsulation of outgoing packets belonging to the same association and the corresponding destination address MUST be disabled." transport encap_port should be updated by a validated incoming packet's udp src port. We save the udp src port in sctp_input_cb->encap_port, and then update the transport in two places: 1. right after vtag is verified, which is required by RFC, and this allows the existent transports to be updated by the chunks that can only be processed on an asoc. 2. right before processing the 'init' where the transports are added, and this allows building a sctp over udp connection by client with the server not knowing the remote encap port. 3. when processing ootb_pkt and creating the temporary transport for the reply pkt. Note that sctp_input_cb->header is removed, as it's not used any more in sctp. v1->v2: - Change encap_port as __be16 for sctp_input_cb. 2020-10-30sctp: add encap_port for netns sock asoc and transportXin Long
encap_port is added as per netns/sock/assoc/transport, and the latter one's encap_port inherits the former one's by default. The transport's encap_port value would mostly decide if one packet should go out with udp encapsulated or not. This patch also allows users to set netns' encap_port by sysctl. v1->v2: - Change to define encap_port as __be16 for sctp_sock, asoc and transport. v2->v3: - No change. v3->v4: - Add 'encap_port' entry in ip-sysctl.rst. v4->v5: - Improve the description of encap_port in ip-sysctl.rst. 2020-10-30sctp: add encap_err_lookup for udp encap socksXin Long
As it says in rfc6951#section-5.5: "When receiving ICMP or ICMPv6 response packets, there might not be enough bytes in the payload to identify the SCTP association that the SCTP packet triggering the ICMP or ICMPv6 packet belongs to. If a received ICMP or ICMPv6 packet cannot be related to a specific SCTP association or the verification tag cannot be verified, it MUST be discarded silently. In particular, this means that the SCTP stack MUST NOT rely on receiving ICMP or ICMPv6 messages. Implementation constraints could prevent processing received ICMP or ICMPv6 messages." ICMP or ICMPv6 packets need to be handled, and this is implemented by udp encap sock .encap_err_lookup function. The .encap_err_lookup function is called in __udp(6)_lib_err_encap() to confirm this path does need to be updated. For sctp, what we can do here is check if the corresponding asoc and transport exist. Note that icmp packet process for sctp over udp is done by udp sock .encap_err_lookup(), and it means for now we can't do as much as sctp_v4/6_err() does. Also we can't do the two mappings mentioned in rfc6951#section-5.5. This patch is to add the functions to create/release udp4 sock, and set the sock's encap_rcv to process the incoming udp encap sctp packets. In sctp_udp_rcv(), as we can see, all we need to do is fix the transport header for sctp_rcv(), then it would implement the part of rfc6951#section-5.4: "When an encapsulated packet is received, the UDP header is removed. Then, the generic lookup is performed, as done by an SCTP stack whenever a packet is received, to find the association for the received SCTP packet" Note that these functions will be called in the last patch of this patchset when enabling this feature. v1->v2: - Add pr_err() when fails to create udp v4 sock. v2->v3: - Add 'select NET_UDP_TUNNEL' in sctp Kconfig. v3->v4: - No change. v4->v5: - Change to set udp_port to 0 by default.
