2026-06-09ASoC: SOF: ipc4-control: Fix TOCTOU in sof_ipc4_bytes_putPeter Ujfalusi
In sof_ipc4_bytes_put(), the copy size is derived from the old data->size in the buffer rather than the incoming new data's size field from ucontrol. If the new data has a different size, the copy uses the wrong length: it may truncate valid data or copy stale bytes. Fix by validating and using the incoming data's sof_abi_hdr.size from ucontrol before copying. 2026-05-21ASoC: SOF: ipc4-control: Use local copy of IPC message for sendingPeter Ujfalusi
If a kcontrol update comes to a control right at the same time when the PCM containing the control is started up then there is a small window when a race can happen: while the widget is set up the swidget->setup_mutex is taken in topology level and if the control update comes at this point, it will be stopped within sof_ipc4_set_get_kcontrol_data() with the mutex and it will be blocked until the swidget setup is done, which will clear the control's IPC message payload. To avoid such race, use local copy of the template IPC message instead of the template directly. This will ensure data integrity in case of concurrent updates during initialization. 2025-12-17ASoC: SOF: ipc4-control: Add support for generic bytes controlPeter Ujfalusi
The generic byte control can be used in cases when the bytes data can be changed by the firmware and it sends a notification about the change, similarly to the enum and switch controls. The generic control support is needed as from the param_id itself it is not possible to know which control has changed. The needed information is only available via generic control change notification. Generic bytes controls use param_id 202 and their change notification can contain payload with the change embedded or just the header message as notification. 2025-12-17ASoC: SOF: ipc4-control: Keep the payload size up to datePeter Ujfalusi
When the bytes data is read from the firmware, the size of the payload can be different than what it was previously. For example when the topology did not contained payload data at all for the control, the data size was 0. For get operation allow maximum size of payload to be read and then update the sizes according to the completed message. Similarly, keep the size in sync when updating the data in firmware. With the change we will be able to read data from firmware for bytes controls which did not had initial payload defined in topology. 2025-05-09ASoC: SOF: ipc4-control: Use SOF_CTRL_CMD_BINARY as numid for bytes_extPeter Ujfalusi
The header.numid is set to scontrol->comp_id in bytes_ext_get and it is ignored during bytes_ext_put. The use of comp_id is not quite great as it is kernel internal identification number. Set the header.numid to SOF_CTRL_CMD_BINARY during get and validate the numid during put to provide consistent and compatible identification number as IPC3. For IPC4 existing tooling also ignored the numid but with the use of SOF_CTRL_CMD_BINARY the different handling of the blobs can be dropped, providing better user experience. Implement the sof_ipc_tplg_control_ops.update function to support a control change notification from the firmware on switch or enum control types. Based on the module notification message content, look up the swidget, then the scontrol which was the source of the notification then if the message contains the changed values update the cached values. If only a notification without values received, marked the control as dirty and on next read access fetch the new values from the firmware. 2023-05-23ASoC: sof: Improve sof_ipc4_bytes_ext_put functionPaul Olaru
The function is improved in the way that if the firmware returns a validation error on the newly sent bytes, then the kernel will automatically restore to the old bytes value for a given kcontrol. This way, if the firmware rejects a data blob then the kernel will also reject it, instead of saving it for the next suspend/resume cycle. The old behaviour is that the kernel would save it anyway and on next firmware boot it would apply the previously-rejected configuration, leading to errors during playback. Additionally, the function also saves previously validated configurations, so that if the firmware does end up rejecting a new bytes value the kernel can send an old, previously-valid configuration. The patch adding the bytes control support moved the error check outside of the list_for_each_entry() which was not correct as at the end of the list_for_each_entry() the scontrol will no longer point where the error happened, but it to the list head. Restore the original logic and return on the first error with the error code. Merge series from Peter Ujfalusi <peter.ujfalusi@linux.intel.com>: This series will add support for bytes control and topology types. With IPC4 only the binary payload is sent to the firmware via LARGE_CONFIG message (which does similar multi-part message handling as the IPC3 control message did). The bytes payload itself is not checked by the kernel but user space expected to wrap it in sof_abi_hdr struct in order to get the target information of the binary data. The SOF firmware and sof-ctl have been updated to support blobs used in IPC4 setups.

For module init instance type the put will only update the stored configuration blob and it is going to be taken into use next time the module is (re-)initialized. Large config type of blobs are sent to the firmware whenever the DSP is powered up. 2023-03-07ASoC: SOF: IPC4: update gain ipc msg definition to align with fwRander Wang
Recent firmware changes modified the curve duration from 32 to 64 bits, which breaks volume ramps. A simple solution would be to change the definition, but unfortunately the ASoC topology framework only supports up to 32 bit tokens. This patch suggests breaking the 64 bit value in low and high parts, with only the low-part extracted from topology and high-part only zeroes. Since the curve duration is represented in hundred of nanoseconds, we can still represent a 400s ramp, which is just fine. The defacto ABI change has no effect on existing users since the IPC4 firmware has not been released just yet. 2023-01-27ASoC: SOF: Protect swidget->use_count with mutex for kcontrol access racePeter Ujfalusi
The use_count of the swidget is protect by ALSA core PCM locking with the exception when an associated kcontrol is changed. It has been observed that a rightly timed kcontrol access during stream stop can result of an attempt to send a control update to a widget which has been freed up between the check of the use_count and the message sending. We need to protect the entire sof_widget_setup() and sof_widget_free() execution to make it safe to rely on the use_count. Move the code under an _unlocked() function and use a mutex to protect the execution of the functions for concurrency. On the control path we need to use the lock only for the kcontrol access, the widget_kcontrol_setup() op is called with the lock already held.
