3 daysUSB: serial: wwan: replace __get_free_page() with kmalloc()Mike Rapoport (Microsoft)
usb_wwan_port_probe() allocates the transfer buffers for the read URBs. These buffers can be allocated with kmalloc() as there's nothing special about them to go directly to the page allocator. kmalloc() provides a better API that does not require ugly casts and kfree() does not need to know the size of the freed object. Performance difference between kmalloc() and __get_free_pages() is not measurable as both allocators take an object/page from a per-CPU list for fast path allocations. For the slow path the performance is anyway determined by the amount of reclaim involved rather than by what allocator is used. While on it, allocate IN_BUFLEN bytes rather than a full page. IN_BUFLEN is the transfer_buffer_length of the read URBs, the page allocator was only used because IN_BUFLEN happens to equal PAGE_SIZE on x86. Replace use of __get_free_page() with kmalloc() and free_page() with kfree(). The tty ioctls can race with hangup and end up calling into a tty driver for a device that is already gone or powered down. Serialise the callbacks using the tty port mutex and add the missing checks to make sure the port has not been hung up before accessing port driver data or hardware. This specifically avoids dereferencing a NULL-pointer if a device is disconnected during lengthy break signalling. Note that TIOCGICOUNT and TIOCMIWAIT do not access port driver data or hardware and are therefore not affected by the race. USB serial driver modules register one driver for the USB bus and one or more drivers for the ports on the USB serial bus. When unloading a driver module, the USB driver must be deregistered before the USB serial bus drivers so that I/O is stopped before unbinding the ports to avoid use-after-free in completion handlers accessing port data. Note that the "new_id" attributes must first be removed to prevent new ids from being added and triggering a probe of the USB driver after it has been deregistered. Some drivers for multiport devices access port driver data from completion handlers of shared URBs submitted at attach() or first open() and stopped at disconnect() or last close(), respectively. A simple NULL check before accessing the driver data makes sure that a port state container has at least been allocated, but a completion handler can still race with port tear down. Reorder the disconnect handling so that ports are not deregistered (and their driver data freed) until after all ports have been hung up and the driver disconnect() callback has run so that all I/O has been stopped. 2026-08-03USB: serial: pl2303: add support for PL256X multi-port devicesCharles Yeh
Prolific PL256X devices are multi-port USB-to-UART controllers, including the PL2533, PL2543 and PL2565 variants. These devices use vendor requests that differ from those used by the existing TYPE_HX and TYPE_HXN devices. They also require a separate UART reset request and use a port-specific register for configuring flow control. Add a new TYPE_MP device type and select the appropriate vendor requests, reset operation and flow-control register for PL256X devices. Store the USB interface number so that requests can be directed to the corresponding UART port. Detect the supported PL256X variants using bcdDevice before issuing any legacy vendor requests, as PL256X devices do not accept those requests. PL256X devices support baud rates up to 24 Mbps and do not use divisor encoding. The interrupt URB buffer is allocated in setup_port_interrupt_in() based on the endpoint's wMaxPacketSize: buffer_size = usb_endpoint_maxp(epd); port->interrupt_in_buffer = kmalloc(buffer_size, GFP_KERNEL); When a USB device declares wMaxPacketSize = 8 on its interrupt IN endpoint, the buffer is allocated from kmalloc-8 cache (exactly 8 bytes). If the device sends a short packet (actual_length < wMaxPacketSize), the URB completes with status == 0 and the callback proceeds to read: data[sizeof(struct usb_ctrlrequest)] which evaluates to data[8], accessing 1 byte beyond the allocated 8-byte buffer. This results in a slab out-of-bounds read. Fix this by adding the missing bounds check: first verify that the actual length is large enough to contain the struct usb_ctrlrequest header before accessing req_pkt->bRequestType and req_pkt->bRequest, and then verify that there is an additional byte for the modem signal state before reading data[sizeof(struct usb_ctrlrequest)] inside the conditional. Use sizeof(*req_pkt) instead of sizeof(struct usb_ctrlrequest) for consistency. The interrupt-status packet reports transmit credits returned by the device. edge_interrupt_callback() adds the 16-bit value to txCredits without checking maxTxCredits. edge_write() uses txCredits minus the software FIFO count as the amount of data that fits. Since the FIFO is allocated with maxTxCredits bytes, txCredits exceeding maxTxCredits can cause OOB write in ring buffer. Cap accumulated credits at maxTxCredits. Conforming devices should never hit the cap. The driver submits the read urbs for all ports when the first port is opened, which could happen before the other ports have been probed and their private data set up. If such an urb completes before the port has been probed, the completion handler will not resubmit it, thus preventing any further reads. Fix the ordering issue by not submitting the port read urbs until the port is opened. This also avoids wasting resources (e.g. power) when ports are not in use. Note that the port write urbs are already stopped on close (unless unbinding, but they are also stopped by core on disconnect). Since the addition of write fifo support the keyspan_pda implementation will however return the number characters submitted to the device if the write urb is not already in use. If this number is larger than the number of characters passed to write(), the line discipline continues writing data from beyond the tty write buffer. Fix the information leak by making sure that keyspan_pda_write_start() returns zero on success as intended. If submitting the OOB write urb fails persistently (e.g if the device is being disconnected) the driver would loop indefinitely with interrupts disabled. 2026-06-29USB: serial: digi_acceleport: fix write buffer corruptionJohan Hovold
The digi_write_inb_command() is supposed to wait for the write urb to become available or return an error, but instead it updates the transfer buffer and tries to resubmit the urb on timeout. To make things worse, for commands like break control where no timeout is used, the driver would corrupt the urb immediately due to a broken jiffies comparison (on 32-bit machines this takes five minutes of uptime to trigger due to INITIAL_JIFFIES). Fix this by adding the missing return on timeout and waiting indefinitely when no timeout has been specified as intended. This issue was (sort of) flagged by Sashiko when reviewing an unrelated change to the driver.
